Should have been Louis Gossett Jr.'s Second Oscar

He had already won an Oscar for his role in "An Officer and a Gentleman", but this role in "Enemy Mine" should have nabbed his second one.

I think it took a lot of talent to become an alien like that. He nailed it so perfectly. Especially since he was projecting his character so well from beneath all that makeup. Every Emotion shone through. Not many actors can do that.

However, I know that there's usually a bias when it comes to Science Fiction and Fantasy movies and that there aren't too many that are nominated for Oscars in terms of Acting, Direction and Film. Most of the time, Science Fiction falls into the categories of Special Effects, Makeup, Sound and other Technical Categories. Most in the Academy don't feel that it also takes great Acting to make these films too.

Louis Gossett Jr. got shorted in this one.

Well, let's see the nominations and win for that year (1985):

* Don Ameche – Cocoon
* Klaus Maria Brandauer – Out of Africa
* William Hickey – Prizzi's Honor
* Robert Loggia – Jagged Edge
* Eric Roberts – Runaway Train

Hell YES Louis got robbed. For all the reasons you mentioned.

He definitely should have been nominated for an Oscar, and could have won if he had been. He did win the Saturn award for best actor. It's not a big time award, but give them credit for picking Louis Gossett Jr. as their winner.

Lou Gossett, Jr. has always been an actor of the finest calibre... he's been a favorite with me since I first started seeing him back in the 70s (yes, back in the stone age for you young whippersnappers!)... I've never seen him in anything that I didn't like at least his character, even if he was playing a "baddie"... Sudie and Simpson is another great film that he was in, and in which his acting was superb.

... the hardest thing in this world is to live in it...
