8/10 - One of my favourite 5 sci-fi's of all time. When it comes to special effects I'd prefer this to cgi ANY day!

I give it an 8 out of 10 as well. Which 4 stars out of 5. The Blu-ray is outstanding, i never seen the movie looked this year and also it seemed that it was made only a few years ago! I love the optical, matte painting, model work special effects and as well for the make-up effects.

Great performances by Quaid and Oscar-Winner:Gossett Jr truly helps the movie and ease some of the cuddly parts as well.

9/10

One of my favourite SciFi films of all time. I've always found it very touching.

Just watched this for the first time in years and I quite liked it. I'm taking a few points off for the visual effects, which probably didn't look great even in 1985 and the score, which I found to be a bit intrusive at times. But, the story and acting has stood the test of time fairly well, I thought.

I guess mine would be 6/10 at best.
I've seen this movie for the first time today and for today's standards it's not holding up too well. (not talking about transformers here).
Most of the 10/10 ratings come from people who have seen this movie when it came out. I experience this with other movies from my childhood. One tends to add a bonus because it is a childhood memory.
Also the Story of this movie has been done so many times now ( Star Trek, Stargate..). Therefore it doesn't really have any surprises, which isn't really this movies mistake but one of the causes it doesn't get many good reviews from ppl nowadays.

Also: Playing football with the alien while the slavers are a few steps away...come on :)

8/10
More because it has a heart than being sci-fi.

It gets a 10/10 from me, loved it as a kid and still love it today. I just watched it again today for my umpteenth time. Love it just wish it had more to the ending is all.

reply

9/10 for me beautiful story and beautifully shot and the emotional impact a good sci-fi movie needs, only the ending was a little unpolished imo

5/10, dragged, too cheesy for too long of time at some points, weird homosexual vibe when jerry was having a kid and Quaid was crying over him. things that saved it from being lower were solid set pieces and costumes for the time and Quaid's performmance

"weird homosexual vibe when jerry was having a kid and Quaid was crying over him."

Really dude? Why is it that every time a film comes out with a story that involves two guys becoming close friends, there always has to be that person that claims "homosexuality"? Which by the way, would only apply if they were the same gender, and in this case, they weren't, but even if they were, the character was crying over the death of his friend, and the ONLY other living being he had to talk to, and keep him sane. It's rather understandable in context.
