i loved it as a child, and it's held it's magic as an adult. not the best sci fi ever, but it's damn good!

7 cause it reminds me my childhood, the 80's movies are my time machine :)

I found this movie to be slow, predictable, and painful to look at. I could not feel "warm and fuzzy" because I knew exactly what was going to happen from the moment the cliched main character emerged on the screen. Perhaps this is because I didn't see the movie when it first came out, but the idea has been done so much now, it's just amazing to see a plot so obvious play out nowadays over the course of two hours.

8/10. Good solid classic SF. Must seem odd to the poor folks who grew up on the SYFY or SciFi or WWEGhost channel or whatever it's called.

Mine was 8/10 as well. Along with The Last Starfighter, this was one of the better independent-style sci-fi flicks. But my favorite will probably always be The Last Starfighter, although I'd also give it an 8/10 overall.

2/10. I have heard "painful" mentioned above - that is a good description. It has some "awesomely bad" comedic value though. This is a movie with a message that is so obvious, that is beaten over the heads of the audience, that the less-intellectually inclined viewers are impressed with the "deeper meaning" behind the film. Yea.. we get it. It's cliche and shallow.

Detractors aside I can see their issues but I still think this movie works. The effects aren't up to snuff in comparison to today but the messages are timeless and the performances are actually very good. LGj gives an incredible perfomance if you ask me and I think that the set design is actually very good as well. I gave it an 8/10, it might be a bit high but I appreciate the film to this day.

10/10 A great movie for it's time, and the message is timeless.

I'm pretty sure that the people who give this film anything lower than a 8/10
1) Must not have seen it in 1985 when it came out.
2) Think that for any Sci-Fi film to be good, it has to be laden with "Transformers" type SFX.
3) Have no concept whatsoever that it's one of those rare stories that concentrate on the subtle interaction between the characters while taking them on a moral journey.

or they are not blinded by biased childhood nostalgia,
this movie sucked because of a boring, flat story laden with stupid dialogues

Or perhaps they actually have the ability to understand nuance, and look for subtlety within the story, rather than getting hung up on whether or not it's "gritty" and "intense" like "Game of Thrones", "The Walking Dead", "Hannibal" or pretty much every other show that comes out these days. It is also possible that the have a basic understanding of grammar and word use: I think you meant to say "dialogue", not "dialogues".

you're honestly comparing some of the best tv series of all times to this crap of a trash movie, do you actually have the ability to understand the difference between a tv series and a movie or at least the difference between a good story and a warm fart???

Oh I do have a basic understanding of English grammar and word use although I'm neither living in an English speaking country nor is English a language I use in everyday life and I think you meant "It is also possible that the have..." ->
"It is also possible that they have..."
