What if he fails?

I mean, come on, 30 million is a lot of money - it should be around 85 million in today's currency.

So what if he takes the 30 million, goes to an island somewhere, makes the money grow by playing the stock market, and lives like some rich douche in his expensive mansion and takes on a new hobby of flying his helicopter onto the top of Diamond Head to look at the stars with his state-of-the-art telescope system every weekend with his butler?

Then what happens?

Is the only punishment that he doesn't inherit the 300 million? If so, then why should he even care, when he already has 30 million? Is this movie trying to tell us GREED IS GOOD, like some kind of Gordon Gekko?

Why be so greedy? What can you do with 300 million that you can't do with 30 million?

Sure, you can buy 'ridiculously luxuriously expensive items', but in practical terms, it's not going to make you feel THAT much better if you drive a 100 million Lamborghini than if you are just driving some electric-converted Ferrari Testarossa, is it? It's the same scenery you're seeing, the same place you're going, and so on.

Maybe a bigger house, but thinking what a mansion just 2 million can buy, how big does it have to be until diminishing returns start to nag you in the back of your mind? So if you have to run from your east wing to the master living room 180 meters instead of 47 meters, is that worth all that trouble?

The problem with this premise is that if he 'decides to fail' and just keeps the 30 million, they can't take it away from him, because it's lawfully his now. So how can they punish him if he fails on purpose to get 30 instead of 1 million? What are the consequences if he 'tries', but whoops, makes his fortune grow instead of spending it? So he doesn't get 300 million.. is that it?

I mean, what kind of rational human being would be so greedy that they would go through that spending spree to get the 300 million, when they could just keep the 30 million and invest it wisely and at least easily double or triple it anyway..?

As I said, this movie makes no sense on any level, and it's not even entertaining with those awful close-ups and no-flow-style editing and directing. Ugh.. I WANTED to like this movie, but .. can't.

If he didn't spend it all by the end of the 30 days, he had to give it all back. The firm of solicitors got any of the money left that he didn't spend. That's why they wanted him to lose.
