Why does Airplane! get more respect than Top Secret!? Airplane is constanly listed on the top comedy lists, but numerous people have told me they walked out of the theatre when watching Top Secret. Any thoughts...I personally love both, but Airplane isn't quite as random and truly unique as Top Secret.
shareAlthough I love both I would give the edge to Airplane. Top Secret has more a scattershot approach to the comedy were Airplane stays true to it's story and lets the humour come out of that. Truth be told I would still want to watch Top Secret over any of the scary movies including the two pretty good ones that Zucker was involved with.

I love both movies, but honestly, Airplane is just one level above TS. Here's a list I compiled of Airplane jokes that are stand alone better than Top Secret.
-Kareem Abdul Jabbar: this one kills everytime. "I'm Roger Murdock, I'm the copilot!" and the kid is like "no dude! you're KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR!"... and when he passes out, he has his goggles and shorts!!!
-The Kramer sunglasses: GENIUS !
-The traffic controllers: the cameo of the Zucker brothers, sums up the whole movie.
-"I've got to concentrate concetrate... I've got to CONCENTRATE CONCENTRATE...Hello?... hello... hello... Echo... echo... echo... Pinch hitting for Pedro Borbon... Manny Mota... Mota... Mota..." --------- Another GENIUS JOKE! first of all he tells to himself he has to CONCENTRATE, and then he right away has some flashback about some baseball game! and who the hell are Pedro Borbon and Manny Mota?? I mean two nobodies coming out of nowhere, like it wasn't Pete Rose pinch hitting for Jhonny Bench....that's how concentrated he is
-"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
-Ted's sweating while landing the plane
-"keep them at 24,000. No, FEET!"
Top Secret is easily better than Airplane. Look, let's face it. With Airplane we're basically seeing a scene for scene remake of Zero Hour (1957), a film with Dana Andrews as Striker, Linda Darnell as Elaine, and Sterling Hayden as Kramer. The dialogue is pretty much the same. In other words, with Airplane we're seeing people doing deliberately wooden, cardboard 1950s disaster movie performances, because that's exactly what it is. For the most part the main characters aren't spoofing at all.
Top Secret is a brilliant, hysterical film from start to finish. I don't get why people say it has no climax or momentum when they have an entire raid on the fort and the whole underwater fight. The level of inventiveness is off the charts here. The first time I saw it when I was about 10 I was practically in tears from the opening credits on. Skeet surfing!

shareTop Secret is more fun to watch imho but I'll give Airplane it's kudos for being the pioneer of bringing slapstick comedy back in a big way...what Top Secret does is it manages to polish off Airplane's slapstick rough spots.
