Why does Airplane! get more respect than Top Secret!? Airplane is constanly listed on the top comedy lists, but numerous people have told me they walked out of the theatre when watching Top Secret. Any thoughts...I personally love both, but Airplane isn't quite as random and truly unique as Top Secret.

I think that the anal intruder gag is what hurt Top Secret. It was an unspeakable subject. I'm sure that many people walked out at that scene. It was just taboo at that time. Still is too many. I couldn't screen this today for 2 of my 4 siblings. Face it what makes it funny today is it's over the top, Oh my god, there's people who would do this.
The other thing is think about seeing this in the theater. You would hear less that 25% of the dialog. We walked out of Funny Girl I think it was, because we were just missing too much. And it's not nearly as hilarious as this.

shareAgreed. Anal intruder 'joke' was comletely unnecessary and unfunny. Its the only thing that I think lets down the movie. I'm not a prude at all, but it means I couldn't watch this with my parents, my church housegroup, or even my new girlfriend without embarrasement. Even Naked Gun doesn't go so low for a cheap gag. And this was 25 years ago. I guess the director was thinking he was 'breaking new ground' but the movie would have been perfect without it.

Top Secret! in its way, is just as brilliant as Airplane! but the latter sort of invented the new genre, so it's more accessible, even if it might not be as brilliant! Everything they did was brilliant with Airplane!, Top Secret! Naked Gun, Naked Gun 2 1/2 and the Hot Shots' films!
Personally I thought Airplane! was the better movie. It's jokes kept coming at you so you were always laughing whereas Top Secret! had too many gaps between jokes to keep you laughing. I also preferred the cast and characters in Airplane! because they all had these bizarre attitudes and they actually had more character development which is good no matter what movie genre it is.
shareAirplane is the mother of all spoofs. It cannot be outdone even if the directors wanted to. Top Secret while very good & underrated, but not quite in the level of airplane which was better scripted & intensely more natural than top secret. Also the superb performance by Bridges, Graves & stack is one of the reasons why airplane is simply the best, incomparable in fact.

ahhh its tough to say which one is better...they are both actually really different...visual gags goes to top secret though...come on who comes up with a tree on train tracks with a guy running full speed trying to catch it
shareI thought Airplane was ten times better, but the two are so different, Top Secret has a lot more story to it while Airplane is mostly made up of gags and puns, so I think it just depends on the audience.

Like many have said before me, Airplane for the dialogue & Secret! for the visual gags - although both crossover and have some hidden gems.
In my opinion, we have the two funniest movies here, perhaps the question should be which is third behind them?

I gave them both a 10. If I was forced to decide which was better, I would probably end up saying Airplane!, but I could be swayed either way.
I just had to go through my vote history to find how many other comedies I gave a 10.

Top Secret wasn't funny at all...it was stupid!!!....but airplane is really funny
shareI loved both movies, but I have to give the edge to "Airplane!" since it spoofs a couple of my favourite genres, the "Airport" movies and disaster movies.
