Where are they now?

Anybody have any idea where any of these kids ended up?

Too bad Dewayne committed suicide at the end, he seemed the wisest of all the kids. I thought there was a follow-up on the documentary that specifically answered that question? As I don't see it on imdb, I guess there wasn't a follow-up...

By the way, does anyone know the title/artist of the song that is played at the end while the credits are shown? Thanks.

It is a shame to see these young lives go thru such hardships. There is a lot more to this movie than what was told. The donut shop, boy that was a place, Gunther was his name, rumours had it that he allowed prostitution in his shop, once again, I say rumours. In one part of the movie u will see a scene in which there is a guy jumping on a mattress. Thats D. Rudda wearing the classy overalls. He and I were kinda lost kindreds. I was 13 and he was older. He and I broke into my folks, house when I was 14. My folks were well off but could'nt handle parenthood. I was a test subject for my father, who was a psychiatrist as far as meds went. From 5 to 12 I was given meds. Ranaway from group homes and ended up on the streets of Seattle. I picked meters, stole food from stands at the Pike Place Market and stole from the drunks while they slept in the alley and underpasses. I ate the big bucket of french frys from Ivars for my meals on the pier, surprised I havent had a heart attack lol. I am 40 now and have a family of my own and carry on my responsibilities as a normal adult, however, the past still haunts me. I feel bad for the thing I did as a child. I just pray that I can be a better father than the one I had as a small boy. I would like to know where shadow is, he and I worked at the Orion Center. We worked in shop together. It's funny how thing come together. I am planning on writtin a book about my experiences as a child on the streets. Once again, I was not filmed in the movie streetwise, but I hung around with the kids that were.God Bless Dewayne.

Hey dude, did you have a street name? I basically lived on picking meters for years. I was the meter picking king.

reply

Oh man. I totally agree with you about Dewayne. So sad.

There was a follow-up, it wasn't a movie, it was a news program special. Something like 20/20 or one of those shows. It was in the mid 90's. About 10 years on. I'd love to find it. I now work with kids in out-of-home placements and foster care. I first saw the original documentary when I was in a runaway shelter in 1985. I had never been a runaway and after watching that I was sure that I didn't want to be.

I found some information, here is a link:
http://www.maryellenmark.com/frames/stwise.html

"In December 1985 Martin received a call from Lou Ellen Couch's sister. Lulu had been stabbed to death in a street fight while defending a friend. Her last words were, "Tell Martin and Mary Ellen Lulu died.""

"Today Erin Blackwell has two children. She has a boy named Daylon born February 5, 1985. I photographed his delivery and it was an unusually easy birth. On May 1, 1987, she gave birth to a girl who she named LaShawndrea."

Cheryl McCall's (the writer) profile states she died of lung cancer in October. It was interesting to learn she was from McKeesport, which is basically in Pittsburgh, the city where I myself am from.

And I found that the last song "Take Care Of All My Children" is from Tom Waits. Thanks.

UPDATE: A review answers a lot of questions, dated Nov 24, 04 and written by lutherdesmond, but this is the first time I've seen it posted, must have missed it.

reply

Actually her last words were, "Mary Ellen," the newspaper interpreted it to mean "tell Mary Ellen Mark LuLu died."

Dood, did you have a street name?

reply

Ratt went missing shortly after the film, he is presummed dead. People believe that the older gentlemen he was hanging with killed him. The scene were he is on the train was actually the last footage of him taken, and was the last time he was seen.

IT ALL HAPPENED SO FAST

From reading an excerpt in Mary Ellen Mark's "Exposure" said that Ratt did time for drugs in prison. She visited him and he was tall and looked more grown up...guess that's what drugs and jail does to you.

reply

Well folks well just say the Rodent aint dead yet ;)

reply

I'd be surprised if he was, Rat seemed very wily and resourceful.

reply

No I think it's called puberty and adulthood...

reply

On wikipedia it says "Rat had been incarcerated in prison for a while, and was last reported to be driving a truck at night for a living." Of course I don't know if it's true, but yeah.

reply

I was a runaway in Seattle 4 about 3 years, but was not in the movie or in the life publication however, I knew a lot of those kids. We used to hang out at the orion center in seattle. It was considered a safe haven during the day. I was abused by my psychiatrist father who gave me meds since I was 2 years old and by my mother who was just plain nuts. I was bounced around from place to place until 12, when I ran away and became a street kid. Some of the girls in movie ended up being victems of the Green river killer, others? WHO KNOWS. Patty and Jerry came to austin Texas in 1989(with no baby)They stayed there 4 about 5 monthes and went back 2 Seattle. Jerry is in a band know. Havent talked to him when are father figuire developed pneumonia and nearly died. My life and others were completly changed by the system. There is not much help for those that just take off. I have been doing a little and I mean little research. Someone has posted on Mboards that Patti past away due to aids. I would like to know the year. I am scratching my head on this comment. If it was before 1989, then it's not true. She came to Austin that year with jerry. Unfortunatly, there are a lot of rumours of what has happened to these people. Rat wanted to go to alaska to work on fishing boats, whether that is true that he went, no one knows. The man he was sitting with near the end of the movie was an ally drunk, every one knew him. The underpass is where he slept. To anyone who really knows where these people are, let me know. And if anyone hears from them, tell them that "whip" says hi. This is a true move about life on the streets. I lived it with these kids. Juvi was my second home. If I remember right, it was on Capital hill. They had a SPU unit. The reason why I am bring this stuff up is that the truth is out there. And that I lived it with these people. I may not have been in the movie or lifes story, but I lived it. I knew each and every single person portrayed in this film. I have the answers for only the serious people, not about where are they now, but what was it like, how did you get there.ect. Does anyone know they name of Lulu's brother? I do. I am 40 now and still think about the goofy things that we did. For someone reason I feel compelled to talk about this, do research and write the book. Maybe, if I can find out what I can about my fellow street folks, than answers can be givin. There were many more kids on the streets of Seattle then what everyone saw. Try hundreds more. First and pike, Gunthers donut shop, the place 2 be if you were a runaway. Penny's corner, second and pike. Those are memories that I will keep forever.

Where online are these pictures of Tiny, I would be interested to see them. I also am wondering how you found out all this information, it would be of great interest to me to find out more of the whereabouts of these people. Thanks

reply

I can't believe after all these years, this film still haunts me. There was an article in Life magazine in the late 80's...they did a "then and now" issue, and Tiny was one of the subjects. I remember the picture of her...she was laying down on a couch with her head resting in her mother's lap. She was a new mother...there was a picture of her holding her baby. I believe the article stated that she was 17 at the time. Another very interesting fact I remember from the article...Tiny actually attended the Academy Awards the year the film came out...I believe it was nominated in the Best Documentary category, and she was kind of like a guest of honor. The article also stated that after the film was released, she was offered some scripts for possible film and television roles, but she was ultimately turned down for the work because she didn't know how to read.

Anybody who lived the life of a kid on the streets, man...my heart goes out to you. Everybody needs to watch this film.....

I did a little number with a ukelele called 'Not-So-Tiny Tim'..."A Mighty Wind"

reply

I heard the kid who was hanging around the older guy was murdered by the older guy.

Can anyone validate this?

reply

If you click on Rat, you'll see that he's appeared in other projects as a member of his band, playing guitar. Of course, there's no real way to find out if imdb got the right Rat or not.

reply

sadfully its not true..i got excited that rat was ok but that rat was born in England and looks nothing like Rat. It be a real shame if rat got murdered...he was my favorite of all of them i felt like he was the most streetwise.

i think it was clear that ratt was miserable. especially since the first thing he says in the movie is that the thing that he hates about flying is coming back down to the *beep* earth.

Ain't we a pair, Mr. Raggedy Man?

Rat lives in Sacramento Cal with his wife and kids. He ended up being normal.

I don’t know if this is the same Kim I new. It looks like her. I heard that Kim was in the 1984 documentary Streetwise that was filmed in Seattle. I’ve never watched the movie to confirm the rumors. Years later I heard from several people that she was murdered. For the longest time I accepted her fate as fact without ever checking for myself. The years have now gone by. Just wondering if Kim is still alive and how she is doing. I found an article online about the movie and it said Kim moved to New York? Also...photo online looks like Kim.

Patti could very well has fetal alcohol syndrome, which can affect individuals in many ways from mild physical and developmental issues to very severe. It would make sense that she came from a using mother...

(biker) Kim and Steve used to hang out on pike between first and second selling weed. Her sister was a girl covered in tattoos named 'Moom'

Her nephew was a redheaded kid named Larry Lee that worked in Gunthers donut shop for a while and pimped girls down there. I saw Larry Lee in a treatment center about ten years ago getting help for a coke addiction and he said that Kim and Steve were still together. I used to see Steve downtown in the late 90s. I assume that Kim is still around somewhere, once she had her kid she mellowed out quite a bit.

Oh, and patti died of AIDS

Wow, I just watched Streetwise yesterday for the first time. What a powerful film. I'm very glad this was made and that the kids decided to collaborate.
This film is the only documentary that really sticks with me.

Especially Rat touched my heart; what an incredibly bright kid. I really hope the people who claim to know him on these boards are speaking the truth, and that he ended up ok.

It would be great if Mary Allen Mark and her husband would make a short follow-up now, more than 25 years later. It would be really interesting to see and hear how the kids that survived are doing now. But I can imagine some of them would rather not be confronted with it anymore.

reply

Good News... I was on Mary Ellen's facebook fan page and Rats wife, named Janel Scott left some photo comments saying that Rat is doing good and has a few kids and grand kids. She also said that he has talked about doing a follow up to the film.

Patti did have AIDs but that's not what killed her. I'm friends with someone who was close to her and he says she passed from alcohol poisoning.
