Interesting question. Starman came out in 1984 also and both films share a similar premise: someone in a place or time and they must get back to where / when they came from, aided by a sympathetic female. They're both being chased by the government. I think that if Carpenter directed it then we'd get a slower pace with more character definition on both sides of the fence. And a sick electronic score!
