Great movie

I don't think I have ever seen a Dutch movie before. I walked by this VHS a million times in the 80s, and thought a killer elevator sounded lame. Instead it was a creative horror flick with an original and an early anti technology plot. It's not a gore fest, but there a few pretty graphic scenes. I am glad I decided to seek it out and was glad I did.
I give it an 8/10.

I agree. I liked it. It was simple and inventive from a seemingly ridiculous and potentially boring plot idea. The only thing that got to me was how he didn't explain to his wife what he was doing with the other woman.

I watched this first in the mid-1980s on video when I was just a kid, and then again last night in my 30s. When I was a kid, I would not have bothered with a foreign film if I knew it was one. I must have watched an American-dubbed version or something.

I saw this movie for the only time in the mid-90's, I'm currently trying to find it again because remember enjoying it. Will probably look for a subtitled version, because my experience of dubbed movies is usually that they try their best to find voices that don't suit the faces and usually destroy the movie.

Only exceptions to this rule are Shaolin Soccer and anything else featuring Stephen Chow, the dubbing in his movies actually adds to the humour a great deal.

Opinions are just onions with pi in them.

I watched Shaolin Soccer at the cinema. I found it a bit too soft for me. :)

Yeah, it's a nice movie. 7/10

There's something wrong with Esther.

Here I am again 8 years later watching it for the third time in my life. Pretty good film.

I forgot I commented here when it was at IMDB, and it still made me think about how he never explained to his suspicious and annoyed wife that the woman he was seen with was a female journalist investigating the lift incidents and not a girlfriend.

Hey Mike where can I watch this film? You make me want to check it out!

There's a dubbed version on YouTube. You'll find it if you look for "The Lift (1983)".

Thanks!

In the dubbed version I've seen he tells his wife that the lady is a journalist. The conversation takes place during dinner, their kids are at the table as well. Roughly one hour into the movie he explains "It's a misunderstanding. She's a journalist." She doesn't seem to believe him though. :D

About as good as a Dutch film about a killer elevator circa 1983 could probably be.
