The music...my God the music...

Does anyone else agree that the reason this film is so good is because of the music? It's so huge and epic and I think it makes the film seem much more grandeur. Despite the fact that some of the effects and characters look admitably silly and dated, the music is still amazing and the theme is unforgettable.

Anyone else agree?

I love the music.

Being a trekkie/trekker, I always thought that if the United Federation of Planets had an anthem, it would have to be something like the epic theme of this movie.

The music score and definately the theme is timeless. Craig Safan has many more theme and score music that he champions. He uses keyboards and other non traditional instruments in other films, however I beg anyone to download this theme music and judge it to any others which is pure Orchestra. Love the music and the movie. I have said this before on another post and dont care. Safan is the bomb. What a treasure!

Craig Safan's tremendous score does lift this movie above the average.

For me, it's up there beside John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith.

I just re-watched this and listening to the music I hear Star Trek (maybe just the movies), Star Wars, Superman(the movies with Christopher Reeve), and Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

Agreed. Craig Safan's score is first-rate.

I just watched The Last Starfighter again just the other day, and yes, the music is epic and most memorable. It has been playing in my head since. Please tell me it will stop! ;-) Seriously, yes, the effects look outdated, but they were state of the art CGI when it came out. I went on the Universal tour less than a year later, and they had a video demo of some of it, and there were lots of ohhs and ahhs from especially the geeks, of which I count myself being among.

And the music plays on ...

It's certainly a good part of it.

There's no doubt the magnificent score was a big part of what made the film so special. There were a lot of things in this movie that came together to make it a great film, greater than the sum of it's parts perhaps, and one of the bigger parts is certainly the score. There's a depth to this film that's missing from the big effects movies today, quiet reflective moments that totally put you in the mindset of the main character - such as Alex listening to the conversations of the residents of the park, converstaions he's heard a thousand times to the point he can mimic everything being said - and then catches himself, sad because he wants so much more. The music is understated in that scene, but it completely defines the moment and enriches the film enormously. Without doubt, the score to this movie is one of cinemas greats, yet is hugely overlooked due to the nature of the film it's in. Film snobbery keeps it regarded less than it should be.
