I'd say only the Gere/Lane scenes drag it down

They look great but the relationship is sort of dull. Everything else is so period rich in detail from the club shows to the race relations to the gangster manuevering that you wish that had been the sole focus.

But Diane Lane was so damn cute, I give those scenes a pass.

They're both terrible and drag a pretty good film down.

When Lane is naked on top of Gere, that is the one moment where she shines. ;-)
