LOREN; ELKS MAN OF THE YEAR

Somehow, this small detail has not been mentioned on this board; but IMO, small details like this make Coen brothers Movies and add much more depth to their characters..

Loren was obviously a skilled hunter, being named Elks Man of the Year (text on lighter)

This could undoubtedly be correlated with his sniper rifle that he uses on Ray and Abby. He finds a great vantage point of the apartment and manages to pull of the shot 1st try. But then, abby dodges the bullet.

Opening quote... "Now I don't care if you're the pope of Rome, President of the United States or Man of the Year; somethin' can all go wrong"

well... things certainly went wrong for the Man of the Year. (abby dodged his bullet) the skill thing that MADE him Man of the Year.

Elks Man Of The Year means that the Elks which is an organization like the Masons chose him as their best member. I've never been an Elk, but I think they are more interested in their own little exclusive society than they are hunting.

This ^. As previously mentioned, it is a fraternal order. Some members may enjoy hunting but it has nothing to do with their membership in The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. And Loren doesn't exemplify their membership requirements.
