B-Movie with A-Cast

What I would like to know is how they managed to assemble an A-rate cast for an obvious B-movie? The snake scenes weren't all that interesting, but it was great fun to watch Oliver Reed, Nicol Williamson, and Klaus Kinski chew the scenery. Furthermore, the director must have had quite the time dealing with these three actors, all of whom were emotionally unstable drunks in real life.

I agree with you. What really makes it a disappointing movie is that the book was so good. If you ever have a chance, read it. Once you see the characters as the author meant them to be, you can watch the movie and it will not seem so bad. Worked for me anyway.

All three actors had reputations for being very difficult to work with. Kinski and Williamson in particular were prone to very unprofessional behavior such as throwing temper tantrums and dropping out of film projects halfway through the filming.

I agree. Can you imagine being the poor director who had to deal with all these brilliant bastards on one film?!?

reply

It would have been a hell of a set to work on. Or maybe it would have just been hell to work on. But can you imagine the stories that must have come from the set of that film? It's no wonder that Tobe Hooper ran for the hills...

reply

I´m not sure if he ´run for the hills´ or was ´kicked out for the hills´.

reply

No kidding! The fact that this film was even completed is nothing short of a miracle. Can you imagine the back-biting that must have gone on behind the scenes?

I have to say that, though I enjoyed this film, for all the talent involved it could have been better – maybe even with a cast of unknowns. Maybe there are just too many big names here and no one really stands out. Also, the actual scenes of the snake attacks were on the lame side.

The final scene where Klaus Kinski wrestles with the rubber mamba is especially ridiculous (you can tell that he's also trying to wind the snake's body onto his arm to make it look as though it's actually wrapped around him), the others at least seemed plausible.

The movie is worth watching for scenery-chewing by Reed, Kinski, and Williamson (what a shame that all three actors are now no more) but not much else.

reply

Indeed. Great cast in a not-so-great film. And that final scene with Klaus Kinski is ridiculous.

reply

Yes, except add Susan George to that A cast!

reply

I always laughed aloud at Reed's death scene!

reply

Piers Haggard did a director's commentary for the dvd. He relates how Oliver Reed was always picking fights with Klaus Kinski and between takes Sterling Hayden would retire to his dressing room to smoke marijuana.

I thought it was pretty solid.

It was a great cast
