Kirk had time to read “A Tale of Two Cities” during the duration of the movie!? He quotes a passage from the end of the novel near the end of the film.

Fantastic film on so many levels, one of my favorites.

I can imagine Kirk as being the kind of guy who would just skip to the end of a novel to see how it turned out.

Also, we don't know how much time passed over the course of the movie and leading up to that final scene. Kirk gets the book before they leave.

I'm pretty sure they still have Evelyn Wood speed reading institutes in the 23rd century.

Kirk probably reads quick. He was described by Gary Mitchell as "a walking stack of books" once. You don't get to become the youngest captain in Starfleet history without reading a few books.
