bettiegia - Luckily we're allowed to watch multiple movies. Sure, it's no Blazing Saddles, but it is an amusing satire of a play which really didn't need satirizing - and on top of it all, they tried to modernize the production with awesome '80s music, costumes, editing techniques, special effects, etc, etc.
It's so profoundly dated that when you take the amusing parts of the original play (think 'Modern Major General'), then add their attempts at comic bits ("Mabel. Also without a 'k.' God, we have so much in common!"), and then layer in the over-the-top '80s styling (think synthesizer-laden song "Hold On!") and there really is a LOT to laugh about. I don't know how many fans a film needs to qualify as a cult film, but all the Saturday Night Live and Arrested Development fans in my family love it.
Ted Hamilton's character as the Pirate King really is terrific. He performance set a tone somewhat like Graham Chapman did as King Arthur, playing it straight rather than hammy. No, it's not great cinema. It's corny and amateurish, almost totally overacted (Mr. Hamilton excepted) - but there is some real comedic value if you pay attention. And I do consider myself on the snobbish side.
