How funny! Kirk was great!

I've seen many message boards where people said they didn't like Kirk and thought Michael was much better. Personally, the first episode of season 3 (without Kirk) definitely felt like something was missing. As season 3 progressed I only missed the character of Kirk more and more. Michael is an annoying suck-up, where Kirk was meant to be annoying without really caring that he was so. I thought Kirk added just enough to the show without detracting from Bob Newhart. Michael just has no redeeming qualities to me.

I just bought the series and have watched 14 episodes from season 1. I remember liking all the characters from the show, but I have always remembered the Kirk character fondly. I had forgotten he was a habitual liar. I just finished the episode where Kirk has surgery to get Ricky Nelson outta his nose. He leaves Larry, Darryl & Darryl in charge of the diner. And then Dick and Joanna have to come to the rescue because Kirk had a contract to feed inmates coming through each month on the first Monday. Whoever came up with that idea was a genius. It worked so well, and I was laughing so hard when Dick walked into the diner and found out who was there.

The first season is underrated!

I loved Kirk Devane! Even though he was obnoxious, I thought he was much better suited to Bob Newhart's type of comedy than the three oddball brothers. They should've been used sparingly, as I indicated on another thread.

Kirk reminded me of Elliott Carlin. Both characters were not so nice, not downright mean, but very self centered and couldn't care less for others feelings.

What is so funny about them (at least for me) is that everyone has those anti-social "what's in it for me" feelings at least once in a while. But social constraints and sheer politeness keep people from acting out that way.

To watch a character like Kirk Devane was funny because I would think ,"Gee wish I could get away with saying THAT!!" LOL

Kirk was such a good character. Michael and the three brothers were the same thing over and over again. Kirk had better one liners and the actor who played Kirk was great. I missed Kirk when he didn't come back for season 3. Bob Newhart supposedly got rid of Kirk, because he was getting too popular and overshadowed Newhart.

Larry, Darryl and Darryl drove me insane and I love the show. Michael was quite repetative, but i liked him. It almost feels like 2 different shows, the first 2 seasons being one and then the rest. Was quite a switch not having him on the show. Has he done anything to have a fan club? i've never seen him again I don't think.

You are correct, the first two seasons were so different from the rest of the show. After Kirk left, the show just got sillier and sillier. The final two seasons were awful. The first two seasons were smarter than the rest; more like the original Bob Newhart show. The rest of the seasons were very uneven.

reply

I still love Newhart, but they were totally jumping the shark when they got Baby Stephanie to buy the station and were taking orders from her. Just plain stupid. Its funny Newhart didn't say anything since I'm pretty sure he did some sort of protest on The Bob Newhart Show and those are all those episodes you only see him on the telephone.

reply

Baby Stephanie was a horrible idea.

reply

Oh that was so dumb. The show was dying a slow death at that point.
Gotta still love Bob and Tom Poston. They were funny even when it seemed like they were working with what they had. Did you see the episode where he was on The Bob Newhart Show?

reply

You mean the last episode of the series where Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette were in bed? Yes, I thought it was a great ending to a very uneven show. I loved a lot of the episodes, but the final two seasons were just horrible. I guess Bob Newhart didn't care about quality as long as the show was in the top 10.

reply

Yes, that was a great ending. Not sure I got it at the time, but I did when I watched it again. Very clever, but I hated the finale besides that.

reply

Yes, except for the last few minutes of the finale, the rest was just as horrible as the final two seasons.

reply

Yeah, it was really stupid. Someone bought the town? Not sure if they just didn't care anymore or what. Maybe have made Joanne and Dick sell the inn, but someone buying the whole town..that was just dumb.

Still love Bob Newhart though, do not get me wrong! :)

reply

They bought the town to make it into a golf course. Also, having Joanna strut around pretending to be Japanese was pretty racist also.

reply

They had her dressed up or something? Yes, was racist.

Yeah, was a dumb finale but for the last minutes as we said, meant to erase the last bit from your mind. haha

reply

Oh, and anything for a buck.. get me a bullet cause you are making me crazy. haha. Okay, exaggerating there but ya get me. :)
