Who would Alex support for President in '12?

As we know, Alex was moreso a fiscal conservative than a social one, although he was quite socially conservative too, obviously not to the extent of say, Archie Bunker though.

I think he'd would have supported Bachmann until she dropped out, then he would have been a huge fan of Cain and his 9-9-9 plan. I'm not sure who he'd support out of the remaining 4 candidates (Romney, Gingrich, Santorum and Paul)

Maybe Alex P. Keaton would vote 3rd party in 2012.

reply

Alex would have a big problem with today's GOP.

He was not a bible thumper. He was concerned with making money. But he would not put up with people who mocked the president because of his ethnicity and/or percieved religion. He'd have a BIG problem with that.

There is no way he would have supported either Bachmann or Cain.

*Reagan was actually friends with then-speaker Tip O'Neil (Democrat) despite party differences.

*And Alex had a picture of Nixon above his bed----Nixon signed laws establishing the EPA, supporting public funding of PBS, supporting public funding of birth control, vocational rehabiltation for people with disabilities. Nixon also supported affirmative action hiring policies And the tax rate was at least twice as high as it is today.

I think Alex would have pulled a Jim Jeffords and switched parties. The current GOP would have scared him.

People said the same thing in the 1980s that the GOP was controlled by the religious right. Said it a lot after the 1980 election. Alex Keaton was pro business and admired Milton Friedman, of course he wouldn't have supported Obama. His whole character was a conservative response to his more progressive parents. If the show was written now, there would be constant anti-Obama dialogue coming from him.

reply

Forget voting for prez in 2012.....Alex P. Keaton would have RUN for president and won by a landslide. Conservative, adorable little fvcker.

reply

Alex was a fictional character. Michael J. Fox supports President Obama and stem cell research!

If I had to pick who Alex would support it probably be Ron Paul. I don't see Alex going for Romney.

reply

Alex would have told off Ron Paul--who does not support Nixon's stance on Affirmative Action and Contracetive funding.

reply

he was offended by anti-intellectualism

he would have been horrified by people like sarah palin, wouldn't he? i don't think he'd want to associate himself with the party anymore

reply

Good point Mariel. Too many morons in the GOP.

Alex would've probably agreed with Obama on some issues.

reply

Given what's in today's GOP, I can see alex heading up the Republicans for Obama caucus. Or he'd be a Democratic Leadership Caucus member (the pro- big business democrats).

reply

In Spin City Michael Flarety becomes an environmental lobbyist and mentions meeting this idiot congressman from Ohio Alex P Keaton. So apparently he leaves Wall Street and moves back to Ohio to run. The Columbus area is pretty moderate so I could see him having become a Blue Dog democrat by now

reply

And for Ba-ROCK all the way!

reply

I agree with Syd, he'd be running for president and his family would be torn between voting for him or not.

reply

Yeah..those two facts alone tell us his character was better than the actor could ever be.

"Obamacare: It only works if you don't!"

reply

Alex's republican party is dead! As far as presidential politics goes!

"Forget voting for prez in 2012.....Alex P. Keaton would have RUN for president and won by a landslide. Conservative, adorable little fvcker."

Exactly!! Although more mainstream in the 80's, Alex's views would be considered extreme by (ironically) the more extreme members of the left who have become more vocal the last two decades. To address the OP's question... he may have supported the candidates you mentioned in theory. But I believe he would probably be running and win himself :) The GOP isnt as competent as it once was, but he'd still run that way as it still beats the Dems best ideals any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

President Keaton...lol. He was usually able to stump his parents, but I liked how they still did so much for him and loved him despite their differences. Where has that ideology's moderation gone?

"How's the steak?" "It was poisoned (argh)...and a little rare" (collapses).

Michael J. Fox was born in Canada. Did he ever become an American citizen so he can vote?

reply

The question was about Alex, not Michael.

reply

He is a citizen.

reply

Since he's a huge fiscal conservative I'm positive he would have voted for Romney, both in the general election and in the primaries

reply

Problem. Alex P. Keaton actually *was* born in Africa!

reply

to two U.S. citizens who were there temporarily. As with George Romney and John McCain, that makes Alex a natural-born citizen.

reply

Alex would be drooling over Hillary---who had sat on Walmart's board of directors in Arkansas.

His wife would catch him (well, you know) to a magazine of her in pantsuits at corporate board meetings.

reply

Okay, updating this old thread for this year's Presidential election.

There is NO WAY Alex would support Trump, Santorum, Huckabee, Carson or Cruz, to name five. I'd say Rubio, previously Fiorina? (big business leader in Fiorina's case).

When View co-host Sara Haines asked Fox what Keaton would think of Trump, the actor responded, “I don’t think he’d think much of Trump. I think he would have liked [George] Bush. I think he would have liked [Mitt] Romney.”

Fox, who supported Pete Buttigieg during the Democratic primaries, added, “I think he would have liked a lot of these [Republican] guys, but I don’t think he would have dug Trump.”

reply

Alex was a Nixon Republican, and they were very moderate compared to today's party.

I'm fascinated by Alex's character, because he kinda seems a bit inconsistent. He's famously presented as a Reagan-loving conservative, when he comes across more of just a big business-loving libertarian at best. He doesn't really seem to imbue the social conservatism that was also going on during that time. Really, outside of the economics sphere, he doesn't seem to be much of a conservative at all. You know, I'm not saying this to like make some of sort grand political statement, but he kinda reminds me of Trump a little bit. Outside of business and economics, he doesn't really seem to have moral center. Or at least, it's contrived to fit whatever scenario the episode calls for. It's like the writers WANTED a conservative, to contrast with the liberal parents, but outside of the concept that was pitched to the networks, they don't really seem to deliver. Even the parents don't really seem LIBERAL so much as just quirky and open-minded compared to the stereotypical parents of the day.

Also...I remember watching reruns of this show in the 90s. Now that I'm watching it as an adult (free on Prime), I'm noticing that Alex is a lot more of a jerk than I ever noticed as a kid. I think I was just watching the show with my "I LOVE MICHAEL J FOX" goggles.

There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly west

Alex is not like Trump. Alex likes education and listens to authority figures. Alex would understand Biden won the popular and electoral college vote.

Alex held his teachers in very high regard because they were 'experts' and he was not. None of his long term relationships were anything like Melania. And he was furious with even the faintest idea Mallory would be an 'uneducated woman'.

Although he claims to have 'different' views than his parents, he still loves them very much and he is deeply offended when a teacher he DOES invite over to his house repeatedly insults his parents. He is the one who kicks the teacher out of their house instead of taking the letter of recommendation he had wanted for college. He realizes that he does share the same DNA as his parents and DNA means more than the letter.

Alex ALWAYS uses his initial 'Alex P. Keaton'---which officially is 'Peace" he has never tried to hide or legally change it. Neither Mallory or even Jennifer mention their own middle names throughout the series. Alex is ultimately proud of the middle name his parents gave him. He is one of a kind and not like anybody else.

He'd be heading up the Republicans for Biden contingent. He would be hysterical over any type of destruction of the capitol and cops being injured or dying.

Heres why Alex himself is a closet Dem
During 'Death of a neighborhood grocer" Alex is working at a small neighborhood grocer and initially leaves for the 'big new snazzy corporate grocer' who moves in. The whole point of the episode is that Alex learns he actually hates being reduced to just a number by that corporation and wants human contact while he works. They don't know his name and don't care who he is even if they are paying him. So he goes back to the small grocer who values people WHILE he makes money. Alex would never be like Trump in a million years.

He's probably going to end up owning stock etc in a health food mega store. It's not junk food and is what he ate growing up.
