The Scenery in this film....

The light reflecting off the pond....the chirping of birds....
The scenery in this film was so beautiful, it made your heart hurt to look at it.
Makes you determined to find a place to live like that.....*pleasant sigh*.

Anyone agree??

reply

I was there (Squam Lake, New Hampshire) this summer. It hasn't changed a bit. I practically fainted when I saw the lake- it was so amazing. I half expected Hepburn and Fonda to show up in a canoe!

Wow, did you take pictures?
I wish I could see that lake sometime.

I went to college in the area in the late 80's and worked for a gentlemen that had a camp on the Squam Lake. We were fiishing up, and asked if I was thirsty. No tap water, straight from the lake shore. And you know what? Tastes better than any bottled water you could ever buy. I live just a few hours from the lake, and plan to visit again very soon!

I live near Squam Lake, and it is a gorgeous location. What keeps it that way is that the people who live near the lake are VERY stingy about what gets put near or on the lake. Currently I'm working on a series of articles for my job at a Lakes Region paper about the film and the location.

reply

Awesome!
Is your paper on the Internet? If you post photos up on the site, would you please let me know? I'd love to see any photos you took!

Hello ! I am French, and was some weeks ago in NH. I drove around Squam Lake, visited Holderness under the rain, but wasn't able ton find the cottage... I asked many people, but nobody knew, or want to tell me, I don't know...
Could you help me, and send me photos, if you have ?
I would be happy to read your articles.

Hi,

I have been there too and live in Massachusetts. The house that was in the film is indeed still there. if you take a boat out from the dock that Ethel and Norman get gas at, head toward the right, the house is on your right set at the waters edge. The land sticks out a bit and the house is up on a small hill in the trees. The small dock that Jane Fonda does her back flip from isn't there (I guess it was a prop) but there is a small reddish colored boathouse to the right with a long dock that begins at the waters edge. The house is gorgeous and it's huge. There is a tour called On Golden Pond tours that a really nice guy gives from his pontoon boat at the main dock. He shows you all the locations that were used in the movie. The tour is about an hour or so long. If you order the New Hampshire Guide Book (it's free) there is a couple of tours listed in the book but I think that his is one of the best.

Hope this helps!

My friend's family has a house on the lake that we visit every summer (she'll be getting married up there next year). It's almost impossible to describe.
Apparently when they were filming, my friend's aunt didn't want them to be around her property, so Katherine Hepburn took her out to lunch and talked her into it. Class act.
All my Squam pictures are here (in any of the sets labeled "Squam")

The On Golden Pond tour goes right past the house where we stay. We always wave to them.

NH is a very unique state.Living here, you must hold some reverence for all the scenery, and the past history thats happened here. This is where America Started off....not Texas or California as people nowadays might think.
Matter of fact a lot of people from California have no idea where NH is!! What they are missing out on they will never even fathom....

I live in Holderness and have practicaly grown up on Squam. It really is just as gorgeous as it is in the movie. And the ledgend of Walter is true. There's a restaurant named after him too! And the Holderness elementary school just did a play about him!

Having lived on "Golden Pond" myself for 2 years, I can tell you that summer is the ONLY time of year that you would want to live there. Winters are absolutely miserable. I remember many times looking out the window to see the thermometer read -30 F. It's always fun shoveling out the driveway every few days, driving on icy roads, with only Plymouth as anything that resembles a city nearby. Yes, the grass is always greener. I have spent the last 13 years living in California and I have a distinct preference!

My family has summered on Squam Lake for the last 30 yrs, and my Uncle lives there now, he runs the Marina that Norman and Ethel fill up at. Mark Rydell actualyl hired my aunts and uncles to work on the set, my Uncle Pete was boat security (keeping other boats out of the background), my Aunt Patty was Henry Fondas driver, my Uncle Jeff (the one that runs the marina) was Jane Fondas driver, and my Uncle Jack was actually IN the movie! In the scene where the Thayers get gas, the two attendants poke fun at Normans age. The blonde attendant who speaks is Mark Rydells son, and the brunette attendant who has no lines is my Uncle Jack (Keefer)! Ironically enough, in the DVD release of OGP, in the scene selection menu, if you select the marina scene, the still frame they use to represent the scene is Norman looking at my Uncle Jack. We have one of the lithographs that was made of Henry Fondas painting hanging above our fireplace to this day. It has become our family movie, and we love it.

The scenery really reminded me of our summerhouse in Finland. Really made me want to have my summerholiday right now, and jump on the first plane.

Hi TJWild - Wow! You live on "Golden Pond"! I actually caught a glimpse of the lake on one of mt 7 trips to the US (from Australia) and right from the start it has always been one of my favourite movies too. Didn't get time last year but I'll try to get a better look at Squam Lake on my next trip. I also collect movie posters and autographs and I have several posters plus autographs of the Director and the whole cast including even the uncredited Troy Garity, Jane Fonda's 8 y.o.son who sits on the wharf in the petrol pump scene... i.e., all signatures except William Lanteau and Christopher Rydell (both very hard to find) - and I have been trying to find out for years who the other uncredited boy on the wharf was when I stumbled on your IMDb posts just now! I imagine Jack Keefer is not an actor (?) - but I would dearly love to have his autograph to complete my OGP ensemble (when I finally locate Lanteau and Rydell that is). Do you think it would be possible for you to get Jack's signature for me please? I'm not sure how we go about connecting but I guess that can be solved if you and Jack are happy to help - and naturally I would pay postage and any other costs. Sincerely, Rod Cuthbertson, Musk Vale, Victoria, 3461, Australia. [email protected]
