This movie is really stupid, even as a action trash. Sophisticated story with Orwell-like ideas set in a future prison camp. It isn't entertaining at all. Well, it's rather boring and sometimes disgusting. The most stupid idea is that werewolf or something looking like Dr Moreau's experiment. Well it's really shameful that not so bad actors (Olivia Hussey or Roger Ward known of his role of Mel Gibson's boss in MAD MAX) played in such movie. 1/10
I generally love Ozploitation flicks, but this one fell flat on its face. Had so much potential but consistently failed o deliver the goods. Needed to ramp up the violence and get ol' gus actually using the whip instead of simply making the whip crack on ground...... LAME! Seriously a major let down :(
As far as the movie sucking I've seen worse. What got to me was the soundtrack. The continuos chirping of that god awful synthesiser I couldnt actually watch the whole thing it was so bad. Plus in the version I saw everyone sounded Austrailian except for the blond lad, who was dubbed by an american which was just odd. I did like the fact that the main warden was called Thatcher(very clever IMHO)
I LOVE this movie...and my fave flicks are mainly old classics and Oscar winners!!....it's one of my late night guilty pleasures!.....yeh, so it's trash, but we NEED it once in a while. Can't blame Olivia for never having watched it though.
This is my favourite Australian film ever! I think Dojist needs to take movies a little less seriously. Alph rules! This movie is supposed to be violent campy fun.
To put it bluntly, yeah it's not a well made movie. There's issues with squibs in the ground and the actors not looking at the right location, the score leaves a lot to be desired, and as a previous poster said the explosions at the end of the film are lackluster.
As a fan of pure cheese, schlock, exploitation, and gore I love this movie. If you enjoy these films, you're not watching them for their "artistic merit", you watch them for the insanity that they represent, and "Turkey Shoot" does it amazingly.
The only "gripe" I have with the film is that the heroes are nowhere near as interesting as the villains. They're far more intriguing , but don't get the development that the heroes get. Other than that I can honestly say that while I know that "Turkey Shoot" isn't a blockbuster A+ thriller, it is highly enjoyable if you just turn off your brain for a little while, and just enjoy this gory updated version of "Most Dangerous Game."
I thought the only real drawback were the totally pathetic explosions when the planes dropped the bombs on the camp. Maybe they'd run out of money for their pyrotechnic budget by that point?
*spoilers*
The two real standout scenes are the two main villains' demises. The MG42 to the exploding body is awesome and so is the exploding arrow to the flaming head.
They did run out of money. If you read the Notes section here on IMDB, one of the principal investors balked last second and they had to drop 15 pages of script from the beginning of the movie as well a planned Helicopter chase scene was cut.
I can only assume the same happened with the explosion scenes, they probably didnt have the money
