Why couldn't Rudy just tell Barbara the truth about Luke's death?

I don't get why Rudy couldn't just tell Barbara the truth about Luke's death along with him telling her that Roy is desperate about taking over his brother's lot?

Because it's not in the script for him to just tell her.
