They might have loved the stylish Halloween but generally hated the slasher genre it spawned. Maniac is hardly an exploitation film. It has an eerie, effective performance from Joe Spinell and some very disturbing murder sequences. It also boasts a creepy synth score from Jay Chattaway and some of the best gore effects of Tom Savini's career. Siskel and Ebert were not the ones to appreciate a film like this.
