Just how serious was Mark Hamill's 1977 car accident and his injuries?

In a couple interviews, he said his car flipped and he broke his nose and cheekbone and had to have cartilage from his ear to reconstruct his nose. In one BBC interview from 1980 that can be found on YouTube, he said his car only skidded and he only broke his nose.

reply

his car crash has always been play down. his face was mangle. it was so bad mark start crying in hospital when he see his face.

he was lucky. he was still handsome man after accident. but crash change his face.

reply

Hey, BO---I didn't know you were into Star Wars as well. Yeah, i agree with your comments here. Mark Hammil's wreck was a bad one and it did do serious damage to his face. You can sort of see how bad it was in the one scene when he is in the water tank thing for treatment, or maybe it is just prior to that. Probably the makeup department had to work overtime on that.

reply

well pitt, i grow up with only one shit local video store that have maybe 10 video and star wars was one of them so i have no choice. but they are childhood film to me but i do not watch them anymore but i have good memory of them.

i also do not like most star wars fan. anytime i speak to one on internet i get into argument with them. this is because most star war fan are nerdlingers and i do not get along with nerdlingers.

yeah i hear they have to write scene in empire strikes back of luke being attacked by beast so they can show scars on his face. he look like different person. but like i say he is lucky, many people not as lucky as him.

i like mark hamill - he is good actor. i think he was better than han solo in this film. give better performance.

reply

BO---I got into Star Wars when I was like seven years old. Great time to be a kid. I collected a bunch of the original film's action figures and trading cards. I have seen most of the films. But I wouldn't say that I go overboard like some do. I am not a Sci-fi nut to be honest.

It is interesting how very good Mark Hamill is in the SW movies. I never liked a lot of his other movies that much or at least what I have seen. I remember how excited I was to see Corvette Summer in the summer of 1978 at the drive in because Luke Skywalker was in it. Not so great. But he was epic as Luke. I could not picture any one else in that role.

The injuries were bad to his face. Not a good thing if you are an actor. He is lucky he was so important to a billon dollar franchise as they likely spared no dime to help him get what he needed to get things right.

reply

yes pitt i can tell you are normal person therefore if you like star wars then you obviously not one of those nerds having lightsaber fights with other nerds on the street outside cinemas like i see on tv. casual star wars fan is fine i like them but too many nerdlingers around.

yes pitt i know this film you talk of in drive in. i have seen all but one of mark hamills film from 1970s-90s (he did not make many). most of his film are on youtube. no matter how shit a film he is in, he always give good performance. i even like his shit films because of him. i am always interested in watching a good actor as they bring so much to film and hamill is very likable man and underrated and has never got enough credits. he was better than anyone in those shit prequels put together.

yes mark's injuries were bad and have been covered up. if you look at picture of mark from before and after accident, he look like different person. for an actor this could be end, as the face is important, it is everything to an actor, but lucky for mark he was still a good looking man after accident and his face still work. i hope lucas picked up the tab.

reply

I still recall the story of two SW geeks who were fighting it out with propane lightsabers that they created. Well, the one got caught on fire. LOL. I guess he lost. No Jedi skills for him.

I had actually been meaning to post something on Corvette Summer since I saw it recently. I'm not sure if I saw too many of his movies. I know he was in Big Red One which I think was a bit of a disappointment to a lot of people. Certainly nothing he did in the film to cause that. It just seemed to miss the mark as a movie. I know that Mark did do a very good episode of Amazing Stories which was a televison show back in the 1980s.

I think that actors just need to find those right roles and projects were they are given a chance to shine. Mark was fantastic in SW. Again, I can't think of anyone else who should have or could have been Luke. The only one that I could even think of would be Marc Singer. But Hamill just nailed that role so well.

I know that Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had to undergo some surgery after a horrific motorcycle accident about 17 years ago. He seemed to regain his look as well. Not sure if he and Hamill had plastic surgery. Certainly Barnes from Platoon needed it but not for long. LOL.

reply

did the saber catch fire or the nerd? cos its funny if his saber go up but if nerd torch himself that is insane. nerds are suppose to know better. all those hours they put in school and he should know not to mess with propanes.

the big red one, i liked this film. hamill a stand out in this. but it is very slow! i have taste for ww2 films like this. it have weird scene that always stick out with lee marvin saying 'pussy' as he comforts french woman in labour hahah.

I think that actors just need to find those right roles and projects were they are given a chance to shine

yes pitt. many film noobs call hamill a failure because he never star in anything but star wars (and compare him to harrison ford). but an actor should never be judged on how many successful film he is in. actors should be judged on quality of performance and talent. true movie fan know this. watch hamills career and you see talented actor.

mark is not like hayden crystalmeth. his problem is he choose films that had no mass appeal.

Mark was fantastic in SW. Again, I can't think of anyone else who should have or could have been Luke.

yes you are right - mark is luke. he embody role. like chris reeve as superman. no one else come close - these actors become this role and more, like magic. i think one of the other actor who could play luke was william katt - he play blond boy in carrie. i think he was close to being cast. good actor.

so are you steelers fan pitt? or eagles? hamill definitely have plastic surgery.

reply

The nerdburger got hit by the other propane lightsaber and went up like a dry Christmas tree. LOL. I think he was okay. That probably was not very smart to do that.

Steelers fan all the way here up against the Steel City!

I did hear that about William Katt. I'm glad Mark Hamill got the role. He did great with it. He is Luke Skywalker!

reply

nerdburger hahahaahah!!!

have you seen documentary series call 'americas game'? one episode i watch covers steelers 78 team. i always like watching program about sports team with character. very interesting team!! rocky blier was a nam vet who almost get KIA and come back and win superbowl!

reply

The 1978 Steelers just happened to be the first season that I watched the Steelers and the NFL. Great memories. I still look back on that time of my life with a true awe. I made my first communion (Catholic thing) the day of the AFC title game when they beat Houston 34-5 in a freezing rain.

Yes, Rocky was wounded badly in Vietnam and was most fortunate that he was not killed or even that he was not crippled for life. They made a televison movie in the late 1970s or early 1980s about him and his experiences called "Fighting Back" that starred actor Tom Skerritt as Rocky. Maybe you can find it on the net.

I recall thinking one time how Rocky was 35 in the summer of 1981 and just freshly retired from the NFL and he had four super bowl rings and was a Nam veteran. That was a lot of accomplishment for someone so young. He must have felt that he had lived several lifetimes by that point.

reply

so you catholic, pitt. irish or polish?!

yes i watched rocky blier film after seeing 78 steeler documentary, it is on youtube, but it is not tom skerrit playing rocky, it is robert urich (great manly man actor), and also a young bonni bedelia who was bruce willis wife in die hard 1 and 2. very brave and determined man he is! a nam hero and superbowl champ. legend! so much character in this team

i watched all the americas game steeler documentarys from the 70s but the 78 team stand out. legends! do you like terry bradshaw? he never spoke in any of the steeler docimentarys and i found out he did not get along with

reply

Okay, good correction here BO. Yes, it was indeed Robert Urich. Nice catch there. I believe that he was in a rather different movie from circa 1982 called Endangered Species. My one buddy and I used to watch it on satelite back in the day to see the silent helicopter. Scary as heck to think they could have that.

But yeah, Rocky's story is truly amazing. The 1978 season was much the same. 14-2 for the Steelers. I still remember watching those back to back Saturday games at the end of the season. First one was in the snow against the Colts and the next week was at Denver when the Steelers held off a goal line attempt by the Broncos for a great record. Your assignment is to get yourself a Steelers jersey or some sort of attire and tell everyone in Egypt how great the black and gold is. I am so excited for the season.

Terry Bradshaw was a fantastic QB. I don't think he ever got the credit he deserved. He had a not so good relationship with the Steelers organization and Pittsburgh after he left football. I just hope he knows how much everyone still loves him to this day. I remember as a kid telling my mom to get me Terry Bradshaw peanut butter from the supermarket. She also made me a #12 Steelers figure in ceramics class. I still have it. Those were special times!

I actually left the Catholic faith in 1986. It seemed kind of silly to me. But I guess it or anything else can be good if it gives you a positive vibe that enables one to feel and have a relationship with our creator.

I have English, Irish, and Czech blood in me. It's what made America what it is----we are all pretty much a bunch of mutts with mixed bloodlines. It's very hard if not impossible to find anyone in our country who would have pure ethnic bloodlines. Mixed races is pretty common now. I can think of a lot of pretty white girls I knew who married and bred with black guys and hispanic guys. It's the new norm. Whatever makes people happy.

reply

yes i have watched endangered species as well but it is confusing film!

sorry pitt, but i already have favorite nfl team and that is new york jets. i see documentary on there 68 team and joe namath and i become fan. this man namath is 60s icon. namath is like john lennon and jim morrison combined to me. i believe he also come from Pennsylvania. but i like steelers they are good team with character.

some nfl teams that stick out when i watch americas game documentary:

green bay packers in 67 and 68 with lombardi
don shula's miami team in 72 and 73
bears in 85 with mcmahon
raiders in 70s and early 80s with alzado, snake and matuszak
steelers in 70s with bradshaw

^ if i was not jets fan i would be fan of one of these team! i like team with character. i would've liked bradshaw to speak about his time with these team. that is nice your mom make you steelers figure. whatever you experience in childhood stay with you forever! did you like chuck noll?

i know what you mean about leaving faith, pitt. there come a time when it no longer make sense. my family have mostly converted from islam to christianity when they move here as there are many, many christians where i live and we fit in. i no longer practice any religion - my religion is film and musics hahahah

oh ok. whenever i see you american i notice a lot like to talk about where they from in europe like "oh im irish/german" etc. they seem proud even if they are not fully this type. so i thought you were like this but i guess many dont care hahah stallone calls himself 'italian' but his mother have ukraine heritage haha

reply

You certainly know your NFL, BO. Stay tuned for the Jets this fall with Aaron Rodgers there now. Their best QB since Joe Namath. Okay, Brett Favre for one year wasn't bad either. They have a very loaded team and now with a good QB thing may click. I think you will see a rejuvenated Rodgers this year.

Yeah, a lot of great NFL teams over the years that were fun to watch. 49ers with Joe Montana were really good. San Diego Chargers from the early 1980s with that crazy Air Coryell offense was cool. John Jefferson and Kellen Winslow along with Dan Fouts were amazing.

I think Chuck Noll was a bit of a perplexing and polarizing figure to be honest. Yeah, he certainly did a great job with all he accomplished. Winning four SBs is epic. Mel Blount said they won four titles DESPITE Noll. Certainly Noll stayed on the job way too long. The game had passed him by. He should have hung things up a decade or so before he finally left, more forced out by the Rooneys. Tomlin needs to go as well. He had his time and has nothing to show for things the past decade or so.

Growing up we never really mentioned our heritage. We were just crazy Americans. That's who we all are now. I could see Stallone with Ukraine blood. Tough folks. I pray for them daily.

reply

i dunno pitt. to win in nfl you need great qb and great coach but rodgers is greatness but salah is not. rodgers will drag jets maybe to play offs but salah will lose. they need good coach before they win big.

yes pitt, i saw air coryell on missing rings. that was some team! amazing. also the 1990 bills and 1988 bengals - watching these was like watching greek tragedy. very sad. they deserve championships. heartbreaking losses.

i found the america's team 49ers documentarys boring. i think even they admit it this in 1984 episode. not boring to watch, just boring player. maybe when you watch them in 80s its different? i was never there. it is not my sport or culture haha

the players talk about chuck noll as great man but also strange man. he is like tom landry who flew B-17s in ww2 - great man but quiet. noll seem like interesting guy, shame bradshaw did not like him.

yes that guy tomlin seem to have job for life at pittsburgh. hanging around like a bad fart. i think you need fresh leadership if you want to get back to 1970s dynasty again.

reply

I think Bradshaw got off to a really rough start in his NFL career and he recalled and carried all that stuff with him. The fans and Noll were tough on him in those first few years. But he was great. He does seem to have his problems.

Noll was a good man. But yeah, very different.

The Steelers need to hire a young gun who is more a product of the now NFL. Offensive minded guy like McVay or Taylor of the Bengals. It is what sort of works now. Tomlin is a fine fine person but he has produced nothing as of late. For like more than a decade. Time for a change.

reply

yes i watched documentary on bradshaw on youtube. fascinating man. they show him rolling up to stadium in cowboy hat and truck hahahah. i am glad he win everyone over eventually.

well good luck to steelers next year. i think the man from bengals would be good. i wanted them to win last year. watching golden boy mahomes win everything is now boring. nfl becoming like european soccer with one team dominating like man city.

reply

Someone should do deep fake videos of TESB and ROTJ so as to help people imagine what his face would have been like without the accident.
