Honestly what is funny about this?

In the most sincere way i can sound, i honestly want to know, what makes this movie funny? I barely cracked a smile at any of the jokes or slapstick, it was so insanely bland and terribly acted apart from a rare few.

I would go as far to say this was boring, using the lowest form of comedy (slapstick) as its holy grail. The dialogue was Terrible, apart from some of Dengerfield's rambles, which i assume were improvised for the most part.

So please enlighten me to some funny moments/quotes because i must have missed them.

(fwiw I love golf, and play fairly regularly so that wasn't it...)

When I was 20 in 1980, the guys who loved this movie didn't go to, or dropped out of school; and there were just myriads of them. Just noting a correlation.

Boobs, poop jokes, overacting, blowing up stuff. Dangerfield was a patron saint then.

Not everyone is a Louie fan.

You must be brain dead - one of the funniest movies ever - I bet you're a lot of fun at parties.

I think it's interesting that the op wanted someone to explain what was funny about Caddyshack, but only a few of the film's many fans rose to that challenge. Most of the rebuttals are just mindless insults of the op. Which just proves what I've believed all along, that Caddyshack is an iconic but often bland comedy that we've been duped into believing is a classic. 6/10 for me.

Explaining a funny joke doesn't work. It's like showing the wires in a magic act. You either laugh and get it and thusly appreciate it or you sit there wondering why everyone else is giggling and thusly so much more stupid than your highbrow wisdom.

"Explaining a funny joke doesn't work. "

But explaining an unfunny joke works?

Of course explaining a joke works. It doesn't make you laugh, but it makes you UNDERSTAND why people laugh at it. It ruins the 'surprise' or 'funniness' of the joke, but it definitely works in helping people understand WHY it was funny. Jokes aren't always 'if you don't get it, you don't get it'.

For example, Ty making those weird sounds while golfing might be unfunny to people. However, you can explain that he's mimicking the silly sound effects they had in the old TV show 'Six Million Dollar Man', and after that explanation, the joke can be understood, even if it can't be laughed at (not that it's that funny to begin with).

At least the humor can be understood after the explanation - there are so many jokes like that, that ignorant youtubers just don't get, one example being the 'He never takes a second cup at home' in 'Airplane!', which is a reference to an old coffee commercial that used that kind of a gimmick - the husband can't drink more than one cup, because THAT brand of coffee tastes so bad, but when he is given OUR brand of coffee, he takes another cup.

See, how explaining a joke actuall DOES WORK? It's just that when the jokes are mostly 'meh' and not very funny, NOTHING can make them funny again, just like horses trying to assemble an egg that fell and broke. I will never understand why they thought horses could somehow fix a broken egg in that story, but maybe I could, if someone explained it to me.

Explaining a joke - regardless of whether you think it's funny or not - WORKS. Maybe not in 'it will then make you laugh', but at least in the sense of 'you will understand why others find it funny' a little better.

If you love golf, you must know it is not possible to play 18 holes without at least 10 moments where somebody... if not everybody... in your foursome quotes a line from the movie. If you can honestly say that isn't true, you must be playing with some REALLY dour, humorless people.

There are a lot of people who don't find this movie funny. It really depends on who you identify with in the film.

If you identify with the slobs, i.e. the caddies, the blue-collar folks, the sincere characters, then the movie is hilarious.

If you identify with snobs, those whose personal mantra is "Some people just don't belong", well, then the movie isn't very funny at all.

I would say its because you suck lukyl. Let me guess you are a fan of dark comedies? Was this not deep enough for you?

One of the funniest movies ever in my opinion. I guess if you don't get it, you probably never will.

For what it's worth, I "get" and appreciate the anti-establishment bent of this movie. I can't call it one of the funniest movies ever, however, because about 40 percent of the film's running time revolves around Danny, who is a dull, unfunny douche. For me, "Caddyshack" grinds to a halt whenever he's on screen. It's like watching a Marx Brothers movie in which Zeppo is the main character.

Think what's funny about this movie is how it makes fun of all of the characters in it. These are owners of professions in life that are supposed to be upstanding, elite, and supreme in society, but we see a judge who is very immoral and conniving, a bishop who gets drunk and says there is no God, a trust fund kid Ty who has a few screws loose, an obnoxious millionaire real estate owner who makes fun of everyone, and then there's the groundskeeper who has lost his marbles, the judge's niece who enjoys skinny skiing and going to bull fights on acid, the childish behavior of the tournament players yelling for Danny to miss the shot. You just have all of these eccentric characters coming together at the golf course, and really, you'll get characters like these at country clubs, although they're exaggerated in the movie for humor. There's a diversity of people that come together and humorous things that go on at country clubs with the mixing of the personalities, and I think this movie has fun with making fun of them all. It is the one liners and lines though that are the funniest. It's mostly silly humor so it's not for everyone, but it's definitely a funny film. You have to open your mind a bit and just get prepared to laugh before going to watch it. If you're not in a good mood, it's not going to snap you out of it by visuals or any grand events. All of the humor is in the dialogue.

You must be wooden if you don't get the humor (directed at the OP)

OP must have been watching Caddyshack 2 and gotten them confused.

This and Animal House, if you don't think they're funny then there's something dreadfully wrong with you.

I have the same question about Dr. Strangelove. I thought this movie was HILARIOUS, but Dr Strangelove is not funny.

If something needs to be explained to you, or you need enlightened, you probably wouldn't understand. Unless there is a language barrier, there can be no explanation that would suit. People can't be convinced to like anything, and that's ok, that's why there are so many different movies.
I do not agree with your statement about slapstick; I appreciate all types of comedy, as long as it's not offensive or hurtful. What are some examples of movies that you find hilarious?
