That's the same thing I think about Die Another Day. One of only two movies I've ever walked out on in the theater. The other being Van Helsing. I kind of like Moonraker, but I can understand the hate. For me the problem isn't the far-fetched space business, it's the pretty boring build-up to the space business that eats up 2/3 of the film. It does have some entertaining moments though, and I really like Drax as a villain. But it really drags.
And maybe it's because I'm an 80's Star Wars/Star Trek kid, but I enjoy the space stuff. There have been other Bond movies that involved space, but Bond always stayed on the ground. You Only Live Twice was about Blofeld kidnapping space capsules, and Bond got suited up and almost wound up climbing into a launching spaceship. I don't know what his plan was, if he actually planned to launch, but the point is that just because it has space in it and it was obviously part of the Star Wars cash grab, doesn't mean it's automatically stupid. The sci-fi is pretty cartoonish, but it's also kind of quintessentially 70's/80's, you could get away with stuff like that back before people demanded 100% authenticity out of everything they watch.
The only thing that REALLY bugs me about this movie is Jaws and his girlfriend, that was pretty lame. But oh well. At least they didn't drive off for their honeymoon in an invisible car.
