The Bad News Bears

reply

I hope you're referring to the original. If so, great film.

reply

I was definitely referring to the original. (Does anybody even talk about the remake anymore?) Anyway, Breaking Away and Bad News Bears are both wonderful time capsules about suburban life in the 1970s, that also happen to be truly inspirational sports movies. (And, interestingly, they both have Jackie Earle Haley in the supporting cast.)

reply

On a [ very ] rare occasion a remake can be entertaining, but I would probably only need the fingers on one hand to count the number of times. J.E.H. should have had a better career. Unfortunately, most film buffs only know him from Breaking Away, The Bad News Bears and Little Children. He probably should have received the Oscar for his performance in Little Children, but Alan Arkin received it for his performance in Little Miss Sunshine, a film, the popularity of which, I'll never understand. Hollywood probably gave it to Arkin for sentimental reasons.

reply

But didn't Breaking Away have a tragic sub-text? A brother who was going to die? I don't think Bad News Bears had this sad story line weighing it down.

reply

I do not think there was any dying brother. The only brother in the film is the policeman.

reply

This was a different bicycle movie. Hope I haven't spoiled anything, but it's not hidden if you look at the IMDb page.

reply

I’m confused. Which movie has the dying brother?
Don’t worry about spoiling movies for me. I am not the kind of person who gets upset about stuff like that. If I am on a website called movie chat, I have to expect people to be talking about the movies.

reply

American Flyers, specifically about bike racing. I got it confused with BA, plus it's an early Costner movie I'm guessing most people forget about.

reply

Thanks. I’ve never seen it. It looks like something I would like.

reply

The Bad News Bears and Breaking Away are the two best sports films ever made.
