The Seven Deadly Sins of Alien 79

The Seven Deadly Sins: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Hubris.

Your challenge: Name an Alien scene that best fits one or more of the seven deadly sins.

At the risk of being accused of reaching for the lowest hanging fruit I believe Mr. Parker (and to a lesser extent Mr. Brett) would qualify for greedily attempting to renegotiate their contracts.

Query- can an artificial person have any of the aforementioned negative attributes?

Could be. He did seem to show at least some degree of wrath.

When Kane sort of threw caution to the wind while checking out the egg he had some hubris there. He sort of saw himself as invincible.

reply

It could be that Lambert had penis-envy if xenopedia is to be believed...! :-)

reply

When Captain Dallas insisted that he be the one to chase the Alien out of the air ducts, you could argue that he was being a glutton for punishment.

reply

All good suggestions, I realize some are not "directly" linked to a given deadly sin, but even an implication is worth trying to make a connection to a given scene.

I would speculate the deadly sin Sloth could be connected to Brett. His approach to his job - putting forth little effort to do his job, or doing his job begrudgingly, and repeatedly whining about his pay.

Lust: Parker...when he said he could think of something he would rather eat and looking at Lambert.

If those pen pushers up at city hall don't like it,well, they swivel on this middle digit!

reply

Ooh...good one.

Even though I love Tom Skerritt's portrayal of Captain Dallas, I would nominate Dallas for sloth.

Ripley tries her best to warn him about Ash's suspicious behavior and all Captain Dallas says is, "I just want to get the hell out of here." The science officer, even though he is a total stranger to Dallas, gets to make major decisions for the ship. Dallas doesn't take a step beyond the Company manual and try to discern if something suspect is going on! He does the minimum of what is expected of him, i.e., "Standard procedure is to do whatever the hell they tell you to do."

He was light years away from "the Company" and its policies. It didn't occur to him to go above and beyond his job description, take the initiative, protect his ship and cargo and crew, and figure out if something dangerous was going on.

He relaxes and listens to classical music and doesn't worry that he may have brought a deadly organism on board. He seems totally disengaged from the deadly situation which he has created by bringing Kane aboard his ship. "Hey, I'll relax and leave everything to my science officer who incidentally broke the law and allowed an unknown organism on my ship."

reply

Ripley: "I got you, you son of a b/tch!"

Sounds a tad prideful to me.

BTW, I'm still waiting for an administrative, executive decision on whether or not an artificial person/synthetic can possess aforementioned qualities. If so, Ash qualifies for a few of them. Similar question for Kane's son- do potential instincts apply? I like to think the Xeno is more intelligent than just instincts.

reply

Envy: Ash....penis envy, the way he tries to get Ripley to swallow that rolled up magazine.

I see no need for limitations, have at it.

OK.

I didn't get a hubristic vibe from any of the six human crew members, but Ash seemed rather cocky, arrogant and prideful especially with Ripley and her apparent lack of scientific knowledge (explaining how the motion detector worked) and in re the Xeno- "You still don't know what your dealing with". Gotta love him giving Rip, Parker and Lambert his sympathies just before they disconnected him for good

Now if we expanded to the entire Alien Franchise you would have a couple of good examples of hubris with Old Man Weyland in Pro and Dr. Wren in A4.

Arguably, Ash was also envious of the Xeno which he described as the perfect organism.

reply

Interesting tak on Ash. I don't know much about a synthetic, er, an artificial person's personality. I suppose they have them "factory installed".

Ash did seem arrogant but my take on the scene with the motion tracker was anger.

When Ripley asks, "What's it key on" he looks as though he is barely controlling his anger or at least his irritation with her. He makes a bit of a face and rolls his eyes. Ripley really annoyed him. They had their little talk in the lab and she confronted him with the poor decision he made as a science officer, "not exactly out of the manual." From then on Ash seemed to have a barely concealed disdain for her. I think he realized she might be a threat to his mission.

Of course in the scene when he attacks her, his anger is obvious.

Out of all of them, I'd say Kane had a lot of pride. But I don't think it was sinful pride, just misguided. He was the first to volunteer to go out. He insisted that they go on even after they found that fossilized alien. He volunteered to be lowered into the egg chamber. He seemed to have a lot of pride in his ability to handle any situation. It never occured to him that he might encounter something that was beyond his ability to cope.

I'm going with Malice on the alien himself.

reply

Brett: "Right".

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

reply

Well, at the top my list is greed. First you have Parker and Brett angling for more money to do extra duty. Then you have Kane rushing into the egg chamber because he thinks there may be something valuable in there. At least that's what the novel said. Then you have the unseen company who want to acquire the Alien for profit at the expense of the crew's safety and lives. The second on my list is wrath. Maybe just maybe if the surviving three crew members Parker, Lambert, and Ripley had not tried to blow up the Nostromo as payback for being set up by the company they all would have survived. I have never agreed with the detonation of the ship. I have had numerous debates about this and I still feel that they should have just got on the shuttle and left. They should have left a message for approaching ships to not board due to a hostile organism. But they might have ALL survived if they hadn't split up and if they had just left the ship. The next on my list is Sloth and it concerns Dallas. If Dallas had done what he was supposed to a lot of things might not have happened. I think he should have followed protocol and kept Kane in quarantine. He should have questioned Ash more about what was going on with Kane. He should have stayed on the planet until all the repairs were made. Had he done that the Alien would have been born while they were still on the planet. They could have flushed the Alien out onto the planet's surface which would have been better than being stuck on a metal ship at the ass end of space with an acid bleeding alien. The next on my list is hubris and I would aim that at Parker. Even though I believe that Parker died a hero he had a lot of balls thinking he could bum rush an eight foot tall alien who had already killed three of his crew mates. He could not have saved Lambert. She was scared out of her mind and as a result quite doomed. He could only save his own life. He could have just left the room and ran. He didn't. He was a big guy and thought maybe he could take the Alien on. That takes something called hubris.

reply

Took me a little while but I think I finally figured it out.

Lust - Lambert desires only to go home

Gluttony - Kane insatiable curiosity

Greed - Parker obsessed with making more money

Sloth - Brett least motivated

Wrath - The Alien only wants to kill

Envy - Ash wanted to be a real boy and have sex with Ripley

Hubris - Dallas thought he could break quarantine protocol with no ramifications

Which of course leave Ripley and Jones who were without sin and therefore survived.

reply

Parker takes up several sins by himself- greed (wanting more $) wrath (wants to kill the alien after Dallas dies) lust (I'd rather be eating something else) sloth (doesn't want to do any work when ship breaks down)

Kane- gluttony (did you see how much salad he took at dinner and drinks several cups of water after he comes out of coma?)

reply

I never saw Kane's appetite as gluttony. He was "eating for two" ya know! Pregnant women have to eat more.
The alien was draining Kane's body to feed itself.

As for all the cups of water he drank, he was unconscious for hours and very thirsty upon awakening.

reply

I may be reaching lol but Ash "lusted" for The alien. He viewed it as something new and significant, worth being discovered. Although it's revealed he was instructed by the company to do so, eveytime he speaks to ripley about it he speaks of it admirably

Hey, wasn't this Sci-Fi Zones thread originally ?
