Was a sequel already planned in the original Superman movie from 1978?

I noticed it already had General Zod in the beginning of it and then he was the enemy in the sequel.

They were produced together. Similar to Back to the Future II and III.

The intent was to shoot the two movies at the same time, like they did with "Lord of the Rings", but it didn't quite work out that way. "Superman 2" was originally supposed to be a much darker film, but a new director was brought in and about half of it was reshot.

I think someone pieced together the "Superman 2" that Richard Donner had intended to make, but I have no intention of watching it. The "Superman 2" that was released is an utterly perfect movie, no other version is needed!

Yeah, I think there is an unofficial one, but also the 3-disc version of Superman II has the one made by Donner himself.

The Richard Donner cut is not exactly what Donner himself originally made, as there was no final cut of that version at the time. Hence the use of rough test footage for certain scenes in this version.
