Far Out?

I was a teen in 1978 when I first saw this really funny movie, but we really laughed at the cowboy who kept saying "far out". Even in 78, no one said "far out' anymore. We thought it was hilarious and very nerdy.

"Far out" was still a quite common expression in '78. The cowboy who kept saying it was probably a reference to "country boy" John Denver, who frequently exclaimed it.

Where I lived no one said "far out". It could have been a regional thing. People in my crowd weren't John Denver fans, so I don't know anything about him. As 14 year olds we were into classic rock and even a little punk rock at the time. "Far out" from another generation.

I do think the phrase was less common by 1978. It was on its way out by then, but still used occasionally.
