Worst Gregory Peck Role Ever

Hard to believe that the man who brought us Atticus Finch would stoop so low and do this film/role. It has got to be his worst. Even funnier is the fact he was nominated for a golden Globe for this role!

Best part ... "that infernal jew" ...with fists clutching the side of his head.

reply

I thought his performance was good. He was very convincing as a Nazi villain.

Choocheechoo choocheechoo choocheechoo ya ya pow!

reply

A bit late, but I thought he was great as well

reply

Meh. He was a little miscast but nowhere near as bad as comments led me to believe. I rather liked seeing Peck as a villain, actually.

So he sold you guys with the "that infernal jew" ... with fists clutching the side of his head ... performance. Me ... I just let out a 60 second groan.

Nevertheless ... which GP performances do you think where worse?

Even if this were his worst, that doesn't make it bad. But since you asked:

Looks like most voters don't share your appraisal.

Well done ... I am humbled ... although those are rankings of GP films not GP performances. Perhaps I am alone in my assessment ... but I will says this ... I thought he was much better in Scarlet & Black and The Omen which are lower in the list.

reply

You certainly aren't alone. As I say, I was expecting to cringe based on some of the vocal complaints I read about his performance. Perhaps my lowered expectations let me appreciate it more. I was pleasantly surprised.

PS: Perhaps a more apt description would be "Most Polarizing Gregory Peck Role Ever"?

I agree with you, Chrisso. I just rewatched this for the first time in 25 years. It hasn't aged well, but what really shocked me was how hammy Gregory Peck's performance was. It's almost comical. No, not almost. It is comical.

reply

Yes, well, nazis are comical with a disgusting flavour. I liked Peck in this.

reply

I dont know much about Gregory Peck as an actor, the only thing Ive seen him in was the original 'The Omen, in 1976'. He was a 'goodie' in that film and he struck me as always being a good character actor rather than a bad one.

But as for his role here as the appalling Dr Mengele character, he made me believe in him as a 'baddie' and it made me enjoy his death by the viscious dogs all the more actually.

reply

GO GET "TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD" IMMEDIATELY!!!

You will thank me big time!!!

reply

You MUST watch ar least 10 movies with Gregory Peck! It's Gregory Peck - one of the best actors of his time, so he was acting in the best movies of that time, working with best directors...

The excellent Western "Duel in the Sun" (1946) was one of his breakthrough roles and he played a great villain.

reply

Shut up you ugly bitch!

reply

Yeah, terrible performance, complete with the Grecian Formula hair.

Seriously undercut the whole movie. Peck is one of those actors who simply can't play a villain.
