Full screen

I have never watched this movie in “full screen” format other than VHS in the 1990s. Did the picture reveal any image above or below the scene like the open matte format?

With some shots, the image is taller when compared to widescreen, but you lose a good amount of the picture image on the sides. For a film like Star Wars, it makes the space occupied by the characters look more enclosed when the filmmakers tended for it to be more immersive.

I imagine the trash compactor scene would seem more claustrophobic in full screen.

reply

It would.

If they were pan-and-scan, the only losses would be the sides. There would be nothing new to see.
