Madam Medusa was really mean

She is like so mean when she says "Who would like to adopt an ugly orphan like yourself?"

Every parting from you is like a little eternity.

True Medusa was an awful person, but on the bright side, Penny showed no signs of abuse. She was miserable, but healthy none the less, meaning she was able to eat and keep herself clean, so even though she was forced into a dark and dangerous cave all the time, and she was incredibly lonely, Penny survived.

Penny's a sweetheart and Medusa is a wicked witch who should've been liquidated.

Medusa was Cruella de Vil with red hair! If they ever met in a wrestling match, who would win?

They both have wickedly evil faces and very spasmic body motions

Penny might not 'show' abuse but I'm sure (even w out my having a professional child care/social work license of any kind) that the experience of having been kidhapped inflicted some serious psychological/emotional trauna.

Being abducted and verbally/emotionally abused probablly is traumatic to a little child.

reply

You're absolutely right, gue dan iela.

Medusa's just jealous. Penny is beautiful.

reply

Medusa was just jealous that Penny had real eyelashes.
Urgh, that scene where Medusa's pulling her fake eyelashes off still creeps me out to this day.

reply

Definitely a role that Geraldine Page should have been slapped across the chops for!

reply

Like, if you saw her walking around somewhere (before her death in 1987), you'd want to walk up and hit her for the way her character treated Penny? Well, no personal disrespect for Miss Page, but I can't say I blame you. She was THAT convincing.
Margaret Hamilton of Wicked Witch fame got a similar reputation.

I agree Medusa was nasty, but she was so STUPID! Like the wench can't even start her darn swampmobile and the fact that she screams SNOOPS every 30 seconds lol. I love that she got a fork in the butt. SO funny.

reply

"Like the wench can't even start her darn swampmobile"

Well, Penny couldn't start it either. Not without Luke's special "swamp juice".

"I love that she got a fork in the butt. SO funny."

Totally.

Two theories why Penny looked 'healthy'

First Medusa realized that Penny had to be physically strong to safely and properly retrieve the treasure. Keeping her physically healthy was to her benefit--even if Penny was being emotionally and psychologically abused on a near constant basis.

Second, because it IS a childrens film, showing bruises...etc even if they did occur in a real life version could not happen in this animation. The animators and other Disney staff did not want to scare off their audience and cancel out the film's being able to be shown.

I would think Medusa would win based upon body weight, but I dunno... Cruella seemed more intelligent, insidious and subtle (sort of sophisticated sneaky) while Medusa has a tawdry, gutter-trash common sewer rat kind of savvy, the typical lowlife who fancies herself fancy. It's a toughie. And neither seems to inspire much loyalty in the henchmen. I mean, neither really has the means to bind their followers with the promise of carnal delights, do they? And cash can only buy so much if a better offer appears...

I'm thinking way too much into this.

The actress who played Medusa, far from making me want to hurt her personally, impresses me. I always get a kick out of a good performance and she is almost too glorious for the role. For one thing, she really does have such a rich, syrupy voice, rolling around those phony "classy" tones that Medusa is aiming to display. She pumps meanness to the absolute top until it foams over and still makes it funny. The perfect kid film villain. I saw a movie once that illustrated the difference it would make if the villain wasn't funny... "An Awfully Big Adventure" which is not as sweet as it sounds, not for kids at all. But it showed a theatrical troupe playing "Peter Pan" and you got to see Alan Rickman as Captain Hook! Ah. Then later Hugh Grant, who has been playing up til now a man with no sense of humor at all, has to fill in for him. The kids love the first Hook. The second has half the front row wailing in fear. So mean old Madame Medusa is just the right sort of mean... but to be sure, when she makes the adoption comment, yeah, it's time to start boiling the oil.

Medusa would definitely win in a physical match between herself & Cruella. Medusa is obviously from the wrong side of the tracks and has some physical strength to her, while Cruella comes off as a mean society matron who's never lifted a finger in manual labor. If it were a match of wits, I'd say Cruella would be the victor. In a physical fight, my money's on Medusa.

reply

When does Cruella showcase exceptional wit, however? Out of these two women, Madame Medusa came much closer to obtaining her goal than Cruella did.

Had Cruella been a bit more clever, she would have "processed" the dogs she obtained legally without arising suspicion. Since she had done nothing with any of them (logically we know why, for crying out loud!), it wasn't too smart of her to kidnap dogs with owners, for she was taking an unwise risk.

On the other hand, Madame Medusa had her plan laid out more intelligently. She purposefully kidnapped an unwanted orphan to do her work, knowing that an investigation would not be carried out for long, and this was confirmed by Rufus who stated that the police had given up searching for her. Had it not been for Mr. Snoops neglect in watching the girl, and had not the bottle reached the Rescue Aid Society, Madame Medusa would have been victorious.

I definitely think Madame is the smarter of the two.

Disney definitely needs to release a tournament fighting game. Pit heroes against villains, villains against villains, and even heroes against heroes.

reply

Plus the fact that Penny was never given driver's ed/training. Even in the 70's she's under 18, she has no idea how to drive and is just guessing what to do.

the swampmbile is probably very badly maintained--look at the condition of the riverboat they are keeping penny. It's a falling apart boat. Not a question of 'stupid' and more like they have limited funds and need to keep the operation intentionally covert. Remember they are crooks and getting people out to fix things up even if they themselves don't know how would blow the concept of "covert" It's another reason why this film is very 'realistic' and adult

reply

She was a total bitch. But like any Disney villain, she got what she deserved in the end.

"God is pissed!"-Brian Griffin

reply

Yes,she was mean and got what she deserved in the end!BTW,I did'nt think Penny was homely at all!I thought she was really cute and sweet!I would've adopted her and Teddy in a heartbeat!

reply

It was jealousy. Penny had natural beauty, while Medusa had to wear tons of make-up, lipstick and fake eyelashes.

reply

Madame Medusa was probably told as a child that she herself was homely.

reply

Right. No doubt Medusa had an abusive childhood.

reply

Most likely yes among other things--which is why she ended up running a pawn shop which is a cover for her being a theif. She's not one of the people who works at the UN at the start of the movie---well dressed, refined, polite and 'important'.

reply

Yep, I agree and besides being bad, I think she's almost got the same similarities to other villains.

Tell me, before the Someone's Waiting For You song, she calls Penny "Auntie Medusa wants to talk to you." Now I know there was no mention at all of Penny's actual parents, but she can't be the sister of Penny's actual parents, isn't she?

reply

No, Madame Medusa is not related to Penny. "Auntie" is a term of endearment Medusa wishes to impose upon Penny to establish a relationship and get her to cooperate.

reply

I guess it's possible she was her Aunt. This might sound a little farfetched but Tom and Jerry The Movie was kind of similar to The Rescuers in the sense two animals (in this case Tom and Jerry) were helping a little girl escape an evil guardian (in this case Aunt Figg) and her assistant (Lickboot, though he was far more sinister than Snoops). Given that Aunt Figg was Robin Starling's aunt hence she was referred as Aunt Figg, and seeing as how Tom And Jerry Thde Movie was essentially a rip off of The Rescuers, maybe Medusa was Penny's aunt. But it's still doubtful.

reply

No, I don't think she was her aunt. Just look at them: no family resemblence. Somehow, Medusa met Penny by way of, either she visited the pawn shop for some reason or another, I don't know as the backstory is very vague, but as Rufus said, Medusa had given Penny rides in her car. It's unfortunate that girl wasn't taught not to get into cars with strangers, regardless of how nice they may seem.

reply

Madame Medusa's pawn shop was "down the street" from Morningside Orphanage in a modest neighborhood (one could assume Morningside Orphanage is named after the actual Morningside area in New York, of which I know next to nothing), so it's likely that Madame Medusa came in contact with Penny and the orphans more than once prior to the kidnapping. Madame Medusa stayed behind and continued to run the shop, leaving the treasure hunting to Mr. Snoops, since her disappearance along with Penny's would arise suspicion.

The film was made in 1977--and 'stranger danger' wasn't really an established program/concern back then. Yes it's nice Disney tried to raise awareness through their films. And it does pre-date the Adam Walsh case and movie by several years.

It would make sense yes back then becacause kids weren't usually taught about strangers.....when I first saw this movie it was 1985 so of course I (as a little kid) already understood not to get in a car with a stranger irrespective of how nice they were. Or whatever they promised to give me.

But now I realize that was an entirely different world, and Penny honestly had no way of comprehending just how much danger she was in. She had been taught to trust adults because they were 'authority' figures and 'leaders'.

Instead of making a 'quickie' morals briefing using Jimmy Cricket, they chose a far more sophisticated approach. Fortunately, since this still IS a Disney cartoon (yes), it does have a happy ending. It takes a while to get there though.

reply

Really, it is clear that Medusa isn't Penny's real aunt but a stranger who kidnapped her.
Disney still have not given us an evil aunt character.
We do have two evil stepmothers (Queen Grimhilde and Lady Tremaine), two evil uncles (Scar and Hades) and two evil parental figures (Frollo and Mother Gothel) in the canon though...
