Begs to be remade

Just watched this last night and while I can't say that I loved it, there were a lot of things I did enjoy about it. Without going into all the details, this film is very trippy (think a Scooby Doo episode mixed with an acid trip). However, there was enough of a backstory to make for a very interesting and more serious remake if any director feels the need to do so. Think Raimi might of seen this film before he came up with "Evil Dead" because there are some very similar visuals.

Boy, did you miss the point.

By a mile...

Remake THIS? That's the dumbest idea I've read all day. This is a cult-classic. You don't remake cult-classics.

reply

This should NEVER be remade.
Shame on you for suggesting such nonsense.

Nonsense. Every post I've ever made is undoubtedly brilliant.

Not true, old man. The only posts I've made on that board radiate with sheer brilliance and truth. Especially the "List of films that are better than Avatar" thread.

I recommend that you see this film, House. It is also much better than that silly Avatar film.

reply

[deleted]

But I can help you. I can help you expand your narrow mind away from the mainstream by recommending films that aren't rip-offs made just for making money. It's pretty pathetic actually, James Cameron is trying to milk every last cent he can out of that film.

reply

[deleted]

Hahaha. You've just denied what I said without giving any evidence to support your own claim. In other words, you post was completely pointless and foolish. I think the fact that Avatar has recently had it's SECOND DVD release right after its SECOND theatrical run is enough evidence that James Cameron is just hungry for more money. He knows that foolish Avatar fans such as yourself will continuously shell out your money to watch the same generic, lame film over and over again.

"James Cameron and Fox made it clear right from the start there will be a number of DVD releases."
How does this change anything? All you've proved is that they were planning on pumping as much money as they could out of it from the start.

Do you know what critics are? They're just people that have seen a lot of movies, like me. Their opinions are worth no more or less than mine.

And by the way, why did you choose to start this argument on the thread for a completely different film? Doesn't this belong on the Avatar thread? I have plenty of posts on that board that you could've replied to. You're tainting the greatness of a film such as House by mentioning the mediocrity of Avatar.

reply

"They're a lot more than that. They're professionals."
Professionals at watching movies? That I am too!

"it won't change anything."
You've said that more than once now. What you don't realize is that I'm not trying to change anything. Just stating my opinion. The fact that you repeatedly say this, along with the fact that you followed me onto this board in the first place just to attack me, exemplifies your close-mindedness and intolerance for other's opinions.

"Nowhere in my posts did I even mention or intend to slag off House"
And nowhere in my posts did I say you did.

"I just thought I'd set you straight on Avatar should you decide to return to the Avatar board and make a total twat out of yourself."
You have done nothing to change my opinion on Avatar or its fans. I can't say I find the fans to be very intelligent, as they do not seem to realize the lack of story in the film (and the fact that its so unoriginal) and only go crazy over the visual aspects of the film, which is the only thing that made it stand out at all. And the fact that every one of your posts ends in an insult shows your stupidity and that you really don't have much to say to support your argument.

reply

[deleted]

"Except you're not experienced enough to be considered a critic, are you? Nice try."
I have seen a lot of movies. That is enough experience.

"Except you state your opinions as if they're reality, when they're not."
My opinions are reality, in my opinion.

"You said my mentioning of Avatar, and I quote, "tarnishes" House's reputation;"
You misquote. I said "tainting the greatness". And it wasn't your 'mentioning' of Avatar, it was you bringing Avatar into a board where it doesn't even belong in the first place.

"So you're placing all Avatar fans under one common denominator of "not very intelligent"?"
Yes. Anyone who views the film as superior isn't very intelligent in my opinion.

"you're only looking for an opportunity to sleaze your way out of an argument you can't seem to handle very well."
I think I am handling it quite well, as I am not the one constantly resorting to childish insults.

"If you think my arguments are unsupported, then you should have no problem challenging them. So be my guest."
What do you think I have been doing this whole time?

Why don't you try to make a good argument instead of bringing up the same invalid points over and over again?

And you still haven't answered - Why did you feel the need to bring up Avatar on this completely unrelated board? Did you choose to because of your aforementioned intolerance of other people's opinions? You really shouldn't worry so much about what others think.

OP should atleast be beaten by demonic futons. Hausu is a product of it's time, remaking it is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard.

There'd be no charm, no hidden meanings, no craziness, no retro effects and no 70s vibe. It'd be like any other lame Hollywood remake, and OP wants that?

reply

Every old film today (and by "old" we're probably only talking pre-1990) gets the "needs a remake" thread on imdb. It's pathetic. They just want to remake everything because they are completely unable to appreciate a film unless it "looks modern". If they ever got their way all classic films would be replaced with shallow, formulaic, dumbed down versions of themselves and the movie making heritage would be wiped out in favour of special effects.

Let's remake Beethoven and put some guitars in and a chorus you can sing to, maybe a beat for dancing as well. Let's remake the Mona Lisa with Miley Cyrus instead. Let's repaint the Cistine Chapel, it looks old now and nobody does cherubs anymore.

Clueless. Absolutely CLUELESS!

It was interesting watching the Criterion release and on the documentary, the director said that the effects were meant to not be perfect. So in 1977, while George Lucas was bemoaning that he couldn't get the effects he wanted, Nobuhiko Ôbayashi was just fine with the limitations.

Just because effects technology has evolved, that doesn't mean you'll get a better movie. One example I'd use is 'Poseidon,' which some consider a remake of 'The Poseidon Adventure.' All the ads for that film touted it as being shiny and new because of all the effects they poured into making a fully digital cruise ship as well as turning it upside down with all that flashy water effects. However, that's all the movie had going for it-once the ship was turned over, there really weren't any characters that caught the audience's eye.

One movie I love that I hope never gets remade is Back to the Future. People keep talking about how after 25 years it needs a remake, and it just makes me roll my eyes: leave the time capsules alone!

"Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

It's not just that, the movie makers and their fans are simply out of ideas. And this is ironic since this movie was considered plebe trash by the critics at the time in Japan.

I can just imagine some fancy effects and good acting trying to be pulled off in a remake of this. Or if they go the other way and ham up a production, it wouldn't be much better. They'd be damned if they did, damned if they didn't. In other words, good spoofs is nothing we haven't seen done well before, but House isn't really just a spoof, and it's not even fully a comedy, either. If they're going to make a new movie trying to walk that line, why bother with an old story and movie name? Stop being lazy and create a new one around modern technology.

Then again, I hear they're remaking Suspiria, so anything for a buck, I guess. Hopefully, this movie is even more cult, less digestible, and less known than Suspiria to warrant a Hollywood money remake.

Why can't you be a non-conformist like everyone else?

I wrote a screenplay, it's an American version of this just for fun. I wasn't trying to improve on this film I just wanted to take everything and write it as an American story just for fun.

I loved that the character's names were based off their personalities, and I didn't want to repeat that. Instead I named them after Joss Whedon characters that have similar personalities.

Gorgeous - Cordelia
Fantasy - Marti (actually a writer from Buffy, someone with an imagination)
Kung-Fu - Buffy
Auntie - Aunt Darla
Prof - Willow
Melody - Tara
Mac - Mellie
Sweet - Winifred
Mr. Togo - Mr. Gunn
Ryoko - Serenity
Father - Joss

The girls attend a private school in New York City and the aunt's mansion is in West Virginia. The backstory is mostly the same, except the aunt's fiancee died in the Vietnam war. I know that war is overdone in film but it was the only thing I thought would have made sense.

The death scenes are totally different... I decided to think of things that terrified me as a child and so I used them. One of them is cleaning in the kitchen when suddenly a gigantic spider crawls out of the oven, grows larger and eats her. There's a play-room full of vintage games, toys and a claw-machine with a big clown inside. The claw reaches out, grabs the girl and pulls her in.

It was very, very fun to write.

"Cinema is everything to me. I live and breathe films -- I even eat them!"

Why re-make it? Why not just give this version a wider re-release?
