Why a hero's funeral for Thorn?

He tried to kill his 5 year old son and murdered the heroic nanny who tried to protect the kid. How does that result in an official funeral with an American flag and 3 gun salute? We know the truth but nobody else would.

At best you explain him by saying he lost his mind but his legacy would be that of a psychotic murderer who was thankfully stopped by the bullet of a London cop.
