Nobody knows this movie? unless...

Unless you mention swimming in soda pop and they go Ohhh yeah I kinda remember....GEEZ!!!
It is hilarious at times and at times grating but You can always be sure of a good time to be had. What gets me is the bar scene with the unemployed bus drivers..This movie came before Airplane (4 years before!!) and it has a lot of sight gags and things to be on the lookout for. I hope somebody responds who has seen this movie and has enjoyed it!!

reply

The only thing I remember about this movies is the bus tilting over a cliff, and the crew releasing the flags of the world to move the bus back.

reply

the best part of the movie is when they walk into the saloon and a bar fight breaks out and one guy has a broken candle and oh no !! the other guy has a ripped milk carton...classic

reply

Great David Shire score!

Maybe one day it may be released if it hasn't devolved into Pure Tree Sap like the TRON OST almost did before Wendy Carlos, et. al. rescued it and released it commercially on CD after some two decades of only existing as vinyl albums, cassette tapes (8-tracks?) and bootleg CD's transferred from previously said sources.

... and all of the drivers' names are colors.

I know it, and I loved it. I always assumed it was made after Airplane! until I found out yesterday. It was truly brilliant for what it was.

I saw this movie when I was a kid on cable in the mid 80's. I think it's an absolute hoot, one of the funniest genre parody movies ever made and every bit as witty and hilarious as the similar "Airplane." The guy who makes off with the whole flick is Murphy Dunne, who gives a truly inspired performance as annoyingly chipper and hearty smarmball lounge singer supreme Tommy Joyce.

reply

"Taaaaaaaaaaannnnnnn... gerine!!!!" I laugh every time I see him sitting there in his radiation suit, which he somehow managed to get into despite the fact that nobody else on the bus was able to do it, not even missing a beat in his song. I think that must be my one absolute favorite scene, in a film that I never get tired of watching over and over.

I actually saw this movie in the theaters. I was a senior in high school. I thought it was pretty funny, but later on in life evil forces tried to coerce me into believing the movie was bad.

reply

Evil forces? I am assuming a spouse is involved in this.

I knew of it. I never discussed it with anyone at school. I remember when they all thrilled to Airplane.

Airplane is funny, but the joke is in seeing all the Airport movies, or being aware of them.

Ruth Gordon was supposed to be Helen Hayes in Airport, but she didnt quite live up to it, did she?

Yet still she rounded out the goof-ball passengers.

I think this was the most obvious that exterior setups didn't jive with interior.

There was no way we had passengers seats, dining quarters, bowling alley, swimming pool, bathtubs, kitchen, soda pop, luggage and whatever else there was all on that bus.

But I loved the compact look of the dining area and the swimming pool like it was possible they were there.

reply

That was the joke! All those insane accessories were intended to "not fit"! And many other things which people call "goofs" are really jokes themselves or should be looked as if a joke and not a goof-up.

reply

Tell me about it. I looked at the Goofs section and thought, "You people have got to be kidding. How can you claim to identify goofs when the whole movie is goofy?!"

I love it, though. Just saw it this evening for the first time. Found it listed here on IMDb when I was searching through Ruth Gordon's movies. Can't believe I'd never heard of it before. Always thought the disaster movie spoofs started with Airplane! Wonder why IMDb-ers rated it so low when they rated Airplane! so high.

I love this film!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been a big fan of The Big Bus since I was a kid, when I first saw it on TV. Then when it was repeated a few years later, I taped it. And now I got the DVD. All we need now is a Speical Edition DVD - that would be awesome.

My best bit of the film has to be when the '53 Chevy Pick up crashes into the lounge, and they piano player says:

"Hi welcome aboard the Big Bus, on behalf of our captain and co captain Dan Torrence and Shoulders O'Brien and welcome to the Oriental Lounge"

Then he plays his little jingle whenever someone comes in! Classic Comedy!

"We've turned over..."

I thought I was the only one that ever saw this movie . . . people would look at me like I had two heads when I talked about it. Then finally, one of my oldest and dearest friends knew exactly what I was talking about! The last time I saw this movie was in 1978 - I can only remember the lounge singer, crooning Tangerine and I remember the pool and the bowling alley. A dvd was just sent to me in the mail as an early birthday present! Can't wait to actually sit down and watch it!

I'm not a lesbian, but damn, did Stockard Channing get better looking as she got older?
