"The Night Visitor."

It was made 4 years earlier, 1971 and has a great cast, directed by Laszlo Benedek.

The premise is, von Sydow plays a wrongly convicted man confined for life in an asylum for the criminally insane. He decides to find a way to sneak out and exact revenge upon those who wronged him.

I've just now voted this my favourite von Sydow movie on an IMDb poll. He's a really intriguing character in this.
