The scene that haunts me

After the shark tips over the lifeguards boat and the kids boat. Michael comes up to see what happened. As the lifeguard goes to get on the boat you see the ghostly image of the shark just below the surface silently take him down. I don't know why but that image just really struck a cord with me. Maybe cause its so big and deadly and you clearly it, but it doesn't make a single sound. Anyone else?

Me, too - the estuary victim scene is absolutely terrifying, showing that shadowy giant looming up under the hapless boater...

Yes that scene was actually verging on nauseating when I first saw the movie.

But lest we forget, it was pretty creepy upon first viewing when Ellen came up to the Chief when he was engrossed in the shark book. We then see Michael(?) in his rather penetrable and flimsy boat. When Ellen herself flicks through the book and sees the image of a shark attacking a similar boat (an even bigger one as I recall), she shouts something like "Michael you heard your father, get out of the boat NOW!"

When you first view you think that the kid is going to end up as shark chum!!

"These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them"

reply

That gives the movie a Hitchcock like feel. :)

That's a terrifying few seconds. Williams' music is particularly chilling -- almost dreamlike.

I always thought this guy was retarded. The way he talks, or maybe just he has bad lines to say. "You guys ok over there" Sounds like he's slow or something. It is a great shot. The only thing that ruins it for me is the rubber leg with a shoe on, the guy has no shoes on in the boat before the attack though!!!
Still my favorite film.

he's definitely the one I was happiest to see Bruce munch on.

Hey, Pedder Rabbit, get away from the little boys.

reply

That guy was the scout master! His other lines were...

K Albert! C'mon you goof keep your arms up! [Continues to yell at kids]

At least he wasn't a priest. 

He was played by Ted Grossman, who was a stuntman and bit player, I suspect he was hired for the part more for his stuntman abilities than his acting abilities. He sounded like he had a tough time with the New England accent.

reply

I've always thought that he was drunk.

"You guys okay ova der?"

Definitely one of the most effective scenes containing the actual shark. You know something really bad is about to happen and there is nothing anyone in the scene can do to stop it.

Anyone here mentions Hotel California dies before the first line clears his lips.

reply

The actual real reveal of the shark, everyone mentions that it's when Brody serves him chum out to sea. This first look made me gasp, still does. Just pure terror, nothing else. 😨

I think we've got another shark problem. 

reply

Yeah thats the most effective scene in the movie. I remember how it used to twist my gut when I saw that. It looks real..that the Beauty of it. And the spooky Music to top it off!

absolutely terrifying

reply

The scene was originally much more horrifying, with the shark swimming past Michael holding the man's bloody torso in its mouth.

This scene being discussed is indeed avery creepy scene.

Scary as anything.

reply

They shot that scene didn't they? I'm sure I've seen archive footage of it on the DVD's special features.

reply

It's the first time you ever see the shark's head and the way it just creeps up on you without jumping out is particularly chilling.

I second that, I remember seeing it as a kid being simultaneously horrified and mesmerised. When you see the guy haplessly trying to scramble back on to the boat and the shark stealthily swimming up to the surface to eat him, and then the sweeping shot over Michael as he treads water in shock. I'd say it's up their with the Indianapolis part as my favourite scene in the movie, at least the one that left the biggest impression on me.
