You truely are a moron. I am in the film making business, and we do all our own special effects, you obviously are not. Or are just some amateur who mixes up latex in his mommy's basement and calls it art! It's people like you that allow the spread of garbage like this, your ignorance is unbelievable. Just because you THINK you know how you could pull off a shot like this, you think that people 20 years ago with no cruelty laws at the time, would bother to take the time and effort. This is a fact, not some hollywood urban legend. Speak of what you know, not what you THINK you know.

reply

How old are you? You can't respond to somebody's comment without calling somebody a moron? It's amazing to look at these posts, no matter what the subject or what movie somebody is talking about the vulgar language that is used to ridicule people is truly beyond belief.

reply

Maybe horrorrox was referring to all the helpless insects that were horribly murdered!!! Seriously rox, you can watch people's heads explode, but put some smokey stuff on a kitty, oh no!!! Do you boycott Big Macs, too? Pass the word, sister.

reply

Aren't you uninformed. Oh well, ignorance is bliss I suppose. Keep on believing there aren't people like that, don't bother researching it, live in your nice neat, easy to deal with little world, and I'll just continue to try and actually help in some way, how does that work for you? Yeah, I'm doing this for my health and because I think animal cruelty is just SO MUCH fun to make light of! Do you see me posting warnings about films that are fakes? NO, because I know what I'm talking about. But it's too hard for you to accept, so go on spreading ignorance, talk about things you are only GUESSING ABOUT, because that will help!

reply

I HATE BUGS, WHO THE HELL NEEDS 'EM?. STEP ON 'EM, TURN A FLAME THROWER ON 'EM, JUST KILL 'EM.

reply

Y'know, I've noticed an infestation here. Everywhere I look, in fact. Nothing but undeveloped, unevolved, barely conscious pond scum, totally convinced of their own superiority as they scurry about their short, pointless lives.

Peekaboo! I love playing with these black rectangle thingies. You can use them to reveal sentences, words or even individual letters!

It is important to live your life in a continuous state of childlike whimsy, if you can. With practice you can even do it while operating heavy machinery.

Actually bugs eat up dead plants and animals cleaning up our environment, and help pollinate food plants we rely on.

Without bugs, you could not survive, but go ahead and kill them ignoramus.

reply

Thanks Captain Obvious, but are you going to tell me you've never killed a bug in your entire life? And what good are flies, gnats and mosquitos, besides food for other creatures? I can't imagine something with a lifespan of three days having a life-altering impact on me.

reply

That scene with the cute little kitty cat getting torched was fantastic; it's the short of truly nasty and shocking moment that alas just wouldn't fly in a current horror film made in this disgustingly wimpy "politically correct" decade.

Look nonchalant and keep on smiling.

reply

REEEOOOW!!!

[deleted]

I am a fan of movies as well. True, this is a cheezy horror movie meant to spook. Even I am not a fan of animals, especially defenseless cats, getting hurt let alone torched. Totally unnecessary; don't care what anyone tries to justify in having it.

reply

If it was a real cat getting torched then I agree with the OP it was SICK! Why not throw some fire on YOU and let us find that hillarious!

Question your prejudices.

reply

I have to ask...Is the animal cruelty you speak of people stepping on bugs, or do you refer to the tortured cat scene? Since several people's posts were removed, I'm relatively lost. If it's about the cat, then I can understand, but still question your cause.... If it's about the Madagascar hissing cockroaches....Well then perhaps you might want to reshuffle your priorities. There are humans suffering all over the world who FEEL pain and horror and who might better be served by your misplaced compassion.

reply

My main concern is with the cat, and the use of torture of any animal for entertainment purposes. I am a realist and believe in the "use" of animals, but not in torture or cruelty for entertainment.

reply

Is there any indication that the cat was really harmed? I just watched the scene and it looked awfully realistic, so much so that I decided to look here to see if anyone else knew more.

reply

I'm pretty certain that the cat IS dead . . . by now.

reply

The really interesting thing is that the scene with the wife burning up from one of the flaming bug farts is seriously edited on the DVD release but the cat with the flaming head is left intact!

I've seen this movie several times over the years and can clearly remember the scene with the wife burning up being much more graphic and much longer. If I remember correctly the scene ends with her diving/falling into the pool.

As for the flaming kitty, well, let's put it this way, it looked pretty realistic! The only way to find out for sure is to contact someone involved with the making of the movie since there is no commentary on the DVD release.

As for the movie over-all, I didn't really get creeped out until the bugs flew at the end! I have a real thing about flying insects! :-(

reply

Why doesn't someone just read the credits and see if the aspca notice is there.

reply

no notice or message on the credits about no animals being harmed

reply

The ASPCA notice wasn't a thing when Bug was made.

reply

It's pretty obvious in some shots it's a fake cat. Just slow-mo it, and freeze frame. Something's odd with the smoke too. I don't think the kitty was hurt.

"I'm getting the hell out of Stepford."

reply

The cat scenes were the results of quick cuts, not of abuse, and it was a fake cat in the box. Maybe a cockroach or three were hurt in the making of this film, but I'm OK with that.

reply

the cat in the box looks pretty real if you look at the fur and the eyes; I doubt they had the money or time to produce a fake cat.

then again; on the other hand, when the cat is "killed" you hear a loud meowing, but its mouth is closed, so that's a soundbit obviously put in, and when the cat was really in pain, I guess he really would have opened his mouth to sound off.

reply

Oh,please--it was just roaches being offed---they're a pain in the a**, so who gives a damn? I hate them anyway!

reply

Well folks, I am of the belief that the bugs were not really able to make fire - so the bugs on the cat might have been real and might not, but they were not scorching the cat. I really can't imagine a film crew watching a cat burn up for real. My only concern was the cat looked in distress but that may have been just good film editing. Guess we will never know.

reply

This article explains that the film Bug was okayed by the AHA because the scenes of violence against the cat were simulated. This in a story about how not all animal abuse on film is fake.

reply

Well, that’s interesting. The article says the bugs are mechanical.

reply

Interesting indeed.
