Gritty, gripping, awesome

So great that it it makes me wonder who comes to IMDb to vote on movies. A 7.2 for this classic? Not a chance.

Exactly my opinion of this movie. I caught it on Netflix on Demand and I was flabbergasted. I just loved it.

reply

I'd caught a few Voight movies but always wondered why he was such a big name. Did not impress me. After seeing this, I understood how the name got big (even if the actor himself then faded some).

reply

I thoroughly enjoyed it...

very gripping.

Its a superb film.

Sadly seems to have slipped some from 7.2 since your Post.... its current 6.9 rating is bewildering.

Hopefully my 9 rating will help....

reply

Awesome film, an edge of your seat, intelligent thriller. Excellent cast and a fine adaptation of the book. The 6.9 rating is baffling. Not enough explosions perhaps?

I have a guess as to why the ratings of a film like this would continue to fall over time -- Parents that insist their teenagers watch movies they love. Their rating are not only going to have to be lower, but bashing those flicks is a form of rebellion.

I really dig this type of movie and it certainly delivers on the international intrigue/suspense adventure front, mapping up the mid-century European location nicely, but then the film is also burdened with a lots of cheesy, hokey dialogue and an occasional instance of Voight grossly overacting. All in all, I rated the thing 6/10, myself.

think you have to realize the time when it came out. It was pretty realistic seeming. And more than anything for me, the story keeps you going.

reply

Not entirely sure what you mean by that. But, well, it came out in 1974 which was a very strong year for film so, if anything, this context makes Odessa File look 'less' impressive.

Was just that is how movies like that were back then, least to the modern ear and eye on other fronts.

I liked it, kept me engaged throughout; solid, general, good movie entertainment.

It likewise popped up in my YouTube recommendations and I decided to watch it on tubi because I have better control over movies with that app.
