Why are Python fans so arrogant?

I love MP, but my god, the fans on here kind of suck. If someone doesn't like a Python movie, the first response from the fans is "you're not smart enough for British humor, (usually spelt humour to seem more intelligent) go watch the Hangover/Pineapple Express/Super Bad/Family Guy like most stupid Americans". Why do you have to put it that way? Maybe some people don't like this type of humor; it doesn't make them inferior or unintelligent. Would you call someone stupid for preferring pizza over duck l'orange? Well, some of you on here probably would, but everyone's mind works differently and responds to things in different ways. You can't flame someone because they don't like something you do. I honestly think a lot of the users on here posting that they didn't like the movie are just curious as to why they didn't like it, and if they might be misinterpreting the movie itself. But not all British humor is great. Go watch Jeremy Clarkson do his bits on The Stig if you need proof (Some say it's impossible for him to wear socks. And he can open a beer bottle with his testes. All we know is he's called the Stig.) And by the way, just because you watch BBC America doesn't make you a better person than those that watch NBC/CBS/ABC etc..

I don't think the fans of Python in general are arrogant. Take a look at the Michael Jackson fans, those are arrogant. Some of the most agressive fans I've ever come across.

Point is, some people are just naturally arrogant, and they believe that Monty Python is the ultimate thing in comedy and when somebody poses them with an opinion that is on the opposite of their opinion, they can't handle it. This is not just with Python, but it happens with everything, also with music. You can see this on youtube all the time, watch those annoying comments like '122 people are ...'. This is because people cannot accept that taste is taste and that not everybody likes the same stuff.

reply

I just figured the YouTube comments were people desperate for a thumbs up

reply

Michael Jackson fans are not arrogant...most of them can't spell/are crazy and obsessive. I'm a fan of his music but that's because I grew up with it and it reminds me of my childhood. However, I am not obsessed. The obsessed ones are to be feared. Sorry I just had to say that.

I remember Michael Jackson fans being quite arrogant in the 1980s, although not so much anymore.

Not all, but some of the Michael Jackson fans I knew back in the day seemed far more caught up in media hype. Most only liked him because he was popular, and they wanted to jump on that bandwagon. None of them I knew could ever explain why they liked the music. I would get arguments like "Michael Jackson is better than Pink Floyd because MJ sold more albums. Case closed."

In contrast, at least Python fans can explain why they like that kind of humor and what the appeal is. That, to me, makes a big difference. I don't mind a bit of arrogance as long as one can explain oneself coherently.

The arrogance of Michael Jackson fans is the main reason I can't stand him.

True there is a lot of people who senselessly bash those who say they don't like the film as you say accusing them of being stupid americans (I wonder what Terry Gilliam makes of this?) or even (my least favourite response) accusing people of 'taking it too seriously'

However there are also a lot of people who come on here and seem to be trying to dislike it just to be different, almost saying 'Hey you sheep, lots of people like this I don't like it 'cos I'm different' and imagining this makes them superior (if you want proof, check out the post from someone who ends his attacking with 'Dare I say the king has no clothes).

Just like to point out here in the home of the English language, the United Kingdom, we spell humour with a 'u'. That is all...

reply

Here in the United States, home of standard American English, we spell humor without a "u", and the Americans that do so are generally trying to make themselves seem smarter than they are.

Well that's just like, your opinion, man

reply

I have to weigh in here.
I understand fully well that english, be it english english or american english, is rife with bizarre spelling and pronunciation inconsistencies, but the way the british spell all those words ending in '-or' as '-our' bugs me. I say four as fore, and humor as humer. Every time I see that extra u, my mind reads 'colore' or 'armore'. To me, the u is meant to make the o long. Am I making sense here?
Having said that, I generally love british culture very much. And at least they're still better at spelling than the french...

"is this dangerous?"
"not clinically."

reply

I spell it with a "u" (though I'm American), just because it's more fun that way.
Please don't hate me...

reply

Hmor?

reply

That's plain ridiculous. Why would anyone deliberately dislike something just to be cool?

When I came to this film I was really excited. I'm a person who loves laughing... Imagine me about to watch one of the "best comedies ever", and then realizing it's actually really dated and, in some parts, simply unfunny.

I don't like this film and I agree with the OP: some Monty Python fans are arrogant.

reply

I was going to read your post, but you see, I'm not too interested, because I've already got a post. It's a very nice, you empty headed wiper of other people's bottoms!
I fart in your general direction, you English kanigggggghet!

Lets not bicker about who killed whom

reply

It's arrogant to come here and tell people that they are wrong for liking a movie that you personally find unfunny.

Also paragraphs are your friends you stupid American.

reply

Did you even read his post? I think you just proved his point :D

reply

It's spelled Humour, Colour etc in most places in the world, even here in Canada, just because the United States wants to be different.

reply

That, and because they're too lazy to write the whole thing!

reply

I didn't like Life of Brian, but I didn't like PineappleExpress either. Just didn't laugh at all. But still, I like english humour, more or less.

reply

''I like english humour, more or less.''

What do you like about English humour? And how do you compare to Welsh and Scottish humour? Terry Jones is Welsh, by the way, though MP is from England.

I don't think that people who don't like Python aren't intelligent.... I *DO* think people who watch Family Guy are morons.

Snoogans.

reply

Seriously, if you come on a popular movie's message boards to slam that movie, and you're so totally surprised and shocked when you actually get a negative response from some of that movie's fans, then maybe you ARE unintelligent.

For the record, I absolutely love the Monty Pythons.

But I also really don't like it when people throw abuse at you just because you don't like a certain thing. There are fans and there are obsessive fans, and the latter is something you have to watch out for, as they aren't exactly floating above the surface.

I love Python & Family Guy both. I've seen all the Python movies multiple times. I used to be able to quote most of the Python albums and skits and movies from memory. I own the first 8 Family Guy DVD sets...

I once tried to mediate between to groups that were having the same argument about Shaun of the dead eg: Some say Americans don't get UK humour etc- I think that some of the examples of USA humour that are bought by UK Broadcasters are quite dumbed down some maybe us in the UK dont get to see your best? Despite not ever saying Americans dont understand British humour or our humours better than yours etc the racist card was used.

God bless you, OP. God bless you. I don't care for Monty Python. I never have. I pretty much try to keep this a secret because whenever I discuss my opinion on the film I'm met with stares (more like glares to tell truth) and then a barrage of quotes from the film (as if hearing other people say the already imbecilic {in my humble opinion, don't hate me for it} quotes would change my mind about them.) I've totally noticed how arrogant Monty Python fans are and it pisses me off to no end.

I'm glad people find joy in this movie. I don't. All of the overly vocal fans need to get over themselves and have a nice hot cup of shut the *beep* up.

Censorship contradicts art.

reply

Bless you I like Python but not love it (the films are a different story) people tend to defend a favourite "something" to the end and if its not your taste its heretical. Could be worse could go into a shop that sells a cult type item and ask a question the scorn you get for being in their universe but not at their level of commitment.Fanboys of any topic claim the TV series as theirs
