Well, at that time they didn't have user reviews. Critics are just a bullshit occupation made up to increase box office returns.

I never watch movie reviews. Even if they're right, it doesn't mean I'll like the movie if they do or if I'll hate it if they do.
Still, I think most of them have latent inferiority issues and it makes them feel superior to critically critique a movie that cost many millions to make. Those that can - do. Those that can't - become movie critics.
Godfather II was not universally well received when it first came out. I just can't imagine anyone not being stunned at how good a film it was.
