Episode where Albert is a morphine addict

I recently watched the 2 part episode where Albert has become a morphine addict while living in the big city. It seems that Charles, Caroline and the younger kids were all living in the city. Somehow I missed the reason why they were living there. I thought the Ingalls sold their farm in Walnut Grove and moved to Iowa. What big city is there in Iowa? Am I misunderstanding this?

As I recall, the Ingalls were having a tough time making ends meet in Walnut Grove, so they sold their farm to the Carter’s, and moved to the big city.

I think that the idea was for Charles to bring Albert back to WG, to get him away from the bad crowd that he was hanging out with, and to get cleaned up. I generally didn’t care for the character of Albert, but thought that he did a first rate job of playing an addict in these episodes.

This is where there’s a bit of a goof. The “big city” that they were said to have moved to, was supposed to be Burr Oak Iowa, which I’m pretty sure is still a small town to this very day.

This is also where there’s an overlap between the real life Ingalls family, and the television Ingalls. The real Ingalls family indeed lived in Burr Oak Iowa for a year. They left Walnut Grove and moved there to help their friends run The Masters Hotel. They were unhappy there, and missed their friends in Walnut Grove, so they moved back.

It's so funny, because while watching the episode I could have sworn they'd moved to some place like Chicago. And I couldn't figure out why Charles had taken a job selling men's clothing.

I thought Sleepy Eye was the big town round those parts. That's were all the womenfolk would go for fancy big city shopping!

Sleepy Eye was just a regular-sized town. But I would assume a "big city" would have to be at least the size of Minneapolis.

I just like to say Sleepy Eye.

What were they even thinking when they named that town? And apparently it's a real place!

reply

lol, there is an actual town in Kentucky called Monkey's Eyebrow.

Sleepy Eye was a Sioux chief in the mid-1800s. Population around 1000 in the main era of LHotP (1880).

Mankato is named after the Dakota native name for a local river. Population around 5500 during the era.

Walnut Grove is named after a grove of Walnut trees. Population 150 in 1880.

150 trees or people?
