If I recall correctly JulieTX, Grandpa Walton fought in the Spanish/American War (1898). Assuming that he was around age 20 at the time, give or take a few years, he would have been born around 1878. The real Mary and Laura were born in 1865 and 1867 respectively. So roughly speaking, Mary and Laura would almost certainly be around a decade or so older than Grandma and Grandpa Walton, but not quite old enough to be their parents. Probably closer in age to being Grandma and Grandpa’s much older siblings.

That sounds about right Julie. James and Cassandra would be about the same age as the Walton's grandparents. As a reference, I looked up Rose, and she was born in 1886, so about a decade behind grandma and grandpa Walton. If you figure that Zeb was around 20 in the Spanish/American War, then John and Olivia would have been born around the turn of the 20th century.
