one question after all these years

I've seen it probably ten times and the only question I'm left wondering is if the movie went on what happens when the officer doesn't return to the mainland?

A true classic

reply

Probably some sort of investigation in which the islanders can just say he left and allow his plane to be found drifted out into the sea somewhere. Now if there is record of the missing girl investigation, and now the copper turns up missing - add to that the charred remains of the Wicker Man and human flesh then Summerisle has a problem on his hands! But at the end of the day he has a bigger problem next year when the crops fail again.

reply

Why do people insist on posting this moronic supposition?

The crops are not going to fail again. Why? We're told why the crops grow so well on the island in the first place. It's the gulf stream and the rich volcanic soil combined with the fact of the modern cultivar techniques of the late 1870s scientific advancement that allowed strains of plants to be developed that suited the growing season of the island. One bad season in over a hundred years of cultivation is a phenomenal success to failure rate. It's not going to happen again.

Why do idiots bother to watch a movie if they're not going to PAY ATTENTION to the dialogue?

@Lokisgodhi
I'm sick of seeing your retarded comment everywhere on this board. Ugh, regardless of the soil quality, there can be countless other reasons (rains/flooding/heat/drought) that can cause crop failure at ANYTIME. Got that "fool"?

reply

Saint Sergeant Howie put a curse on their crops. YHWH stands a decent chance of deciding to execute that curse and smite them.

Just watched the movie for the first time tonight. That's what I was wondering too. He's there on official police business. It's not as if he's on vacation and doing this unbeknownst to the mainland. They sent him to investigate the strange disappearance of this girl because he received a letter saying so. And now he doesn't return? Then the police are going to come to this island and see it's just a heathen den of sin. I like movies with unhappy endings where the bad guys get away with it, but that's a lot of explaining for the bad guys.

An investigation will be opened, however I won't get anywhere because...

1) Any remains of Howie's body and any personal effects will have been disposed of by the islanders.
2) His plane will no doubt have been dismantled, weighted and sunk way out to sea.
3) The islanders will both be uncooperative and lie to the police.

Who's driving this plane? Stan Butler?

Well, would there have been anything left of Howie? Also, do you think the smoke got to him before the flames did? Do you think he felt pain or literally burnt to death or suffocated first?

reply

People rarely burn to death in a structure fire. Smoke inhalation always gets them first unless they're set on fire.

I'd imagine the islanders would say Howie left and must have crashed his plane in the sea.

reply

Howie flew to the island in a small plain. Barring any other evidence (and there will be none because the body is gone and as we have already seen the islanders are quite adept at lying) the assumption will be his plane went down at sea. The islanders will no doubt dismantle the plane and sink it so parts will eventually wash up ashore somewhere and "confirm" Howie's fate. Rowan Morrison will be found living in her house when the police show up so no problem there either.

reply

Well said would totally work

reply

What about when the investigation turns up the reappearance of Rowan Morrison, the girl reported missing for months? Do they chalk up the original letter for help as a prank?

reply

Or maybe they just explain that Rowan, a rebellious and difficult child, had some trouble at home and ran away and camped hidden on the island somewhere. And just as sgt. Howie turned up, she returned to her parents and all were very happy. Then, case closed, the sergeant left and probably crashed his plane and got himself killed.

reply

The mainland police come to investigate in Wicker Man 2.
