Racial Slurs

I was feeling comfortable with this movie until racial slurs were used by one of the corrupted cops to Serpico. It didn't say anything about it in the keywords either.

this is a movie about the NYC police department in the mid to late 60s...and corrupt, criminal, and in some cases, murderous cops.

you were fine with all of that until a "racial slur"? no offense but i'm not sure if i follow that logic.

reply

What do you think real life cops talked like?

reply

Go watch the Andy Griffith Show, then.

reply

Andy Griffith Show is pretty racist as well. Where are the black people?

reply

People were still using racial slurs on broadcast television well into the 90s, so hearing them in an R-rated movie from the 70s isn't that big of a deal.

reply

what about asians? there are no asians in mayberry. are you saying that blacks are more important than other races?

reply

thats why andy griffith didnt need a gun

reply

LOL. I must remember that line. Hilarious.

reply

Because there are no black people that is racist? Please go to sleep!

reply

There were no coons in Mayberry. Thank Gawd!

reply

Coons? Really? The proper word is "negroes".

reply

Oh, shut up. Please.

reply

Seconded.

I don't think the movie intended you to feel comfortable about it.

reply

I agree. It's no big deal really, I loved the movie, it's really good.

Lisa, perhaps you might be more 'comfortable' watching a romantic comedy staring Harry Connick Jr. Maybe the movie should have portrayed a crude, and corrupted cop unrealisticly, and just had him say lovely, non-offensive things to prevent anyone from feeling uncomfortable, right? Don't make it true to reality- scrub it for anything someone might find unpleasant.

Lisa, my dear delicate little flower, next time you have an original thought, do the world a favor- just let it go, and go bake some cookies or something.

reply

you must have really loved All in the Family.

reply

You were offended when the villains of an R-Rated 1970's cop drama used racial slurs?

reply

[deleted]

They weren't trying to make you comfortable.

reply

It depends on the expectations that are shown here. If you want some information on what you're going to see, it depends on the people on IMDB who show you the info ( Content for parents or the keywords or themes).

OP, you're supposed to not like the dirty cops, them using racial slurs is more reason to hate them.
