Fantastic Sci Fi

of course this film is dated and doesn't live up to modern things, but many of the bizarre concepts are still more interesting and entertaining than much of modern sci-fi.

I like how it gives no craps about origins of tech and gear, and just says, "This is stuff. is what it is. deal, and don't bother questioning it". It's just good, weird, interesting, entertaining sci-fi at its best: plight of people, strange technology (mostly unexplainable, that is what good sci-fi should be about!), decent animations and tone... I always enjoy watching this film.

And it doesn't feel like it is "Art House" to me anyway. There is enough of a progression to a story, that it isn't pointless, directionless "art" waste.

This was one of those films I watched as a kid (since it being animation meant it necessarily was for kids, don't you know), and was left scratching my head in utter confusion, wondering what in the hell I'd just watched...

...which, come to think of it, probably has a fair bit to do with my current love for weird, abstruse and generally incomprehensible films.

But yeah, I watched it again as an adult a few years back, and now it's among my all-time favorites.

yeah, it's not all that deep really, but not obviously apparent either, story wise. not for kids.

this sort of approach doesn't make money now, but I'm glad this existed.
