Fav song in the movie?

Mine is either Gethsemene or herods song

reply

My favorite song in this movie is "Heaven on their minds". Judas definately has the best songs in the movie.

I love Gethsemane and Could We Start Again, Please and Herod's song. When I was little, my mom would watch this every Good Friday as we did spring cleaning, but everything stopped for Herod's song and I would dance around the living room mimicking the dancers in the movie. I was a little girl with a feather duster belting out "King of the Jews!" as I shook my non-existent chest. It was funny.

What's your favorite color?
Blue ... no ... yelloooowwww!!!!

I love them all for various reasons, I could never pick. However the song I like least (and I still like it alot) is when Mary is singing about how to love him, for some reason it doesn't click with me like the rest.

Mine are Gethsemane, The Temple, and This Jesus Must Die.
Gethsemane is easily the most powerful song in the movie (and I also like Michael Crawford's concert version, too), while the Temple scene follows a close second. I like the way he says "Leave me alone!!!!!!!!" in the movie much better than the stage "Heal yourselves!!!!!!"
For some reason, "This Jesus Must Die" is just one of my favorite songs. I think it's the tune and the tempo. Plus, in the movie, there's such a hilarious contrast between Annas and Ciaphas' voices.

The score as a whole is marvelous, so it's very difficult to pick one... But if I have to say out loud "bravo!" to Webber and Rice it's for the long "Trial before Pilate", with lashes and all! It's a masterpiece-within-a-masterpiece, with mass chorus perfectly dueling soloists (mostly Pilate, but Jesus and Caifas too), whit those Stravinskian weird tempo changes, the obsessive ostinatos... I say it can proudly be amongst the most celebrated opera scenes of every time!
"Crucify him, crucify him, crucify, crucify, crucify, crucify..." sung as a military cadenza... Well, pure musical genius!

"This is the Way, there is no other that leads to the purification of mind"

I love Gethsemene. (along with many other people, I see. Maybe I'm not the only one huming along with the tape at traffic lights) However, I'm going to be blasphemous and say that Ted Neeley's performance is actually NOT my favorite. If you haven't heard Michael Ball sing it, you really should. Its amazing. He hits all the emotion perfectly: its not overdone, but its not underdone either. And man can he sing! I play it over and over. (You can see him perform it if you find a copy of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday Celebration in Royal Albert Hall-and if you like Webber's stuff you LOVE this because it has songs from practically every musical he ever wrote performed with choreography by good singers/dancers/actors)

"All the world's a stage"

I have the same opinion, I do not like that song, in fact I dont really like the actress as much as the other either. Ghetesmane, and Trial before Pilate are the best

"This Jesus Must Die" was the funniest thing on the whole album, especially the line "one thing I'll say for him - Jesus is cool...."

The voice and the lyric always get me.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

reply

Definately Heaven on their minds sang by Judas.

reply

My favorite song is Simon Zealotes. Every time I hear the beginning with the trumpets it makes me cry. I also really like all of Judas songs.

reply

Heaven On Their Minds
Damned For All Time/Blood Money
Pilate's Dream

I don't like that song they only put in the movie. Can we start again, or something like that.

i get chills when i hear "the temple". my other favorites are the overture, "pilate and christ" and "trial before pilate". the best line in the whole movie is "WHAT, DO, you mean by THAT? THAT is NOT an answer!"
my other other favorite part is in "trial before pilate" when the crowds are yelling:
"remember caesar. you have a duty.
to keep the peace o, crucify him!
remember caesar.
you'll be demoted.
you'll be deported crucify him!"

very intense! i love it!

ooh! and my other other other favorite part is...
eh, i could go on forever, but i'll spare you all.

Rule number six: THERE IS NO RULE SIX!

reply

i love pilate's line, it's delivered so nicely.
the best songs, not just from the movie are heaven on their minds, damned for all time, and the argument. maan so awesome.

the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.

Gethsemane and Heaven On Their Minds are obvious choices. The Overture is an amazing piece of musical arrangement. Both of Mary's songs are just beautiful. But for some reason, I just love Simon Zealots - especially the part where the lines go: "We will win ourselves a home. You'll get the power and the glory". The way the chord change moves at that part send chills. And Simon sings it perfectly. So beautiful (the 2000 version ruined this part by playing it a little too fast and changing the melody a little). And of course, Jesus' answer ("Niether you, Simon, nor the fifty thousand") so beautiful.

The truth is, the whole thing is really one big, wonderful song and it's not fair to seperate it into parts.

There's so many good songs in this musical.

Getsemane. Neeley´s version. Amazing. My favorite song E-V-E-R. Maybe because it was the first one I heard. Since then I have listened to several other versions, including Gillans. Couldnt stand it. Maybe I would of liked them if I hadnt listened to Neeley´s version first. I am so stuck up:-) I am comparing everything. My fault. I am sure they are good.

'Heaven on their minds' hands down. Although it might just be Carl's performance that leaves all the others behind.
