Was the series too bright for a target audience of kids?

I've only seen the first two episodes so far (I'm streaming the series on Netflix) and they are deeply intelligent. How representative they are of the series as a whole is something I don't know yet, but I'm wondering if the children who tuned in on Saturday mornings in the mid-1970s understood the stories. Is there any documentation on this?
Thanks!

No. I was in elementary school when they were on and loved them as well as the TOS in syndication.

I remember liking the more intelligent episodes. Of course, I was a 16 year old Trekkie by then. But I think this should have been syndicated rather than relegated to late Saturday morning.

I don't think things should be dumbed down for kids... RETURN OF THE JEDI and the STAR WARS PREQUELS show what happens when you do that.

return of the jedi was still great, come on. Ewoks were not that bad, and the setting/location was cool and new for the series.

I think I was around 7-8 when I saw some of the animated series.
I don't recall the episode or story.
I only recall thinking that for a cartoon, it was almost as entertaining as the live version of the show.

I was in my teens and I do remember disliking the animation, but like the stories. And I distinctly remember not liking the faux theme song, though it doesn't bother me anymore.

Too bright? No. Too good? Regretfully, yes.
