Sympathy for Bobby?

I don't understand, are we supposed to have sympathy for what happened to Bobby? The way I saw it, he brought it all on himself with the gas station alone. Thoughts?

I would hardly call a canoe ride down a river "pitting himself against nature". It wasn't "nature" that got the better of them.
