The chicken died.

So, no matter how many times I saw this scene, it was clear that that chicken had to have been left to die on the cliff after they threw its cage down. Knowing Hertzog's distaste for chickens makes it even more likely that he just left it there to starve and dehydrate. An a-hole move if you ask me. My husband says it's a "robot/animatronic chicken." ....

A chicken that will live forever in film history.

I'd rather die that way then live my entire life in a tiny cage and never glimpse the sun like most chickens we eat in North America.

Heck, maybe I WAS that chicken!

Circle of life.

reply

Yeah that hurts my feelings. But I'm still eating kfc for lunch tomorrow

Assuming the chickens survived the fall, it's horrible to watch and think about. I always fast-forward that infamous scene.
Animal abuse is unacceptable in all its forms. Even from a well known director like Herzog.

reply

The horse didn`t do too well either did it!Just chucked in the river and left to flounder around.

reply

I imagine getting thrown in the river might actually have been prefererable to being on the raft. That horse was constantly slipping and falling down... Also, there was that poor monkey Kinski grabbed and then just threw away. Not the kindest treatment of animals, but at least it made for great cinema!

reply

Kinski likely didn't throw the monkey into the water - you can tell be the direction he throws it. And the sound of the monkey plunging into water was foley since no direct sound was used.

reply

Those monkeys could swim, though! A bunch of them are seen getting off the raft that way. I suppose we don't know if they made it to the other side...

boohoo

poor chicken :( herzog is triggered by chicken for some reason

reply

Considering that robot/animatronic chickens cost a hell of a lot more than regular live chickens from the local market... I'd bet my 401K that it was a live chicken.
