Do the women in your life hate M*A*S*H?

The women in mine do.

They are indifferent either way. None are sexually attracted to Alda or his character. So much for the notion back in the 1970's that either were some kind of sex symbol.

reply

Dunno about that. My 6th grade teacher would sometimes pine for him in the middle of class (circa '76). She was hardly alone.

My mother loves MASH as to my sisters.

I was 10 and we were living in Seoul S. Korea when Season 4 aired. I remember watching it, when B.J and Potter arrived at the 4077th. We sat and watched the entirety of season 4 and start of season 5 from our apartment there.

I thought it was cool to see Seoul mentioned, and other places we'd been.

My wife and I have a deal. She's not allowed to watch the Kardashians while I'm in the room and I wait until she falls asleep at night to watch M*A*S*H.

That would be me, for sure. No Kardashians. Cardassians yes, Kardashians NO with giant capital letters.

My wife and I have a similar agreement. If she watches Kardashians, I get to kick her repeatedly until she repents.

Fortunately, my wife doesn't like any of those phoney-baloney shows and we have an agreement that if she is tempted to watch one, she does so when I am not present. That includes a spectrum of shows ranging from reality TV to anything that is specifically about cats.

My wife does not dislike Mash, but she has pointed out that Hawkeye is full of himself.

My ex-wife couldn't stand the show, but I think that was mostly because I did like the show. She made every attempt to make me not like anything I liked. It was the oddest thing. Perhaps some of you have dealt with this sort of thing. It often went like this: She would see me enjoying something and she'd say, "I don't even know why you like Mash." If I didn't respond, she'd try something else, like, "You know that guy is against the military, right?" It went on and on.

I hated it for the simple reason that it was only funny the first season, and the actual Korean War only lasted 3 years.

reply

I've never met one who loves it or hates it. Never met a woman who had the hots for Alan Alda either, whether it be now or back when the show was first airing. I think a lot of that was a publicity push by the producers. Back before the net they could get away with that a lot easier than they can now.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

reply

Yeah, as a dude I'm comfortable enough with my sexuality that I can safely say that I never saw Alan Alda as a heart throb for the ladies in any show. He's a pretty good comic actor, and over all a solid actor. That's about it.

reply

Yeah, watching the show just last night I was trying to see Hawkeye as a sex symbol, now, I'm a straight guy so my perceptions are probably a little off.

But Hawkeye/Alda is skinny, out of shape, average looks, cynical, temperamental, and overall kind of sooky and needy.

I guess that might appeal to some.

No, my wife and daughter both like MASH a lot. Unfortunately they like the later years while I like the early ones so we sometimes clash over what episode(s) to watch. My ex-wife loved it as well.

As for Alan Alda... as for MASH itself... I don't think there was any effort to make Alda or any of the MASH characters "heart throbs" in the sense that the viewing masses would tune in just to see him/her and need to wear drool bibs (unlike today.) Instead it was for the wit and emotion of the show.

Unless you were there in the early-mid '70s, it's impossible to make anyone realize just how popular Hawkeye and MASH were.

Bravo! I am a woman who grew up on MASH, continues to watch in it reruns, has seen every episode dozens of times and never gets sick of it (well, a few episodes, maybe). My mother is a hardcore fan as well.
I never thought of MASH as being male-centric, or having a mostly male fan base. I always felt it had a pretty universal appeal. I can't imagine what there is about it that would specifically NOT appeal to women. ???

My wife loved it for a while. When she was pregnant with our first, she was extremely sick and so we'd marathon MASH because it got her mind off her trouble. She doesn't actively watch it as much as I do anymore, but she likes it when it's on.

reply

My mother likes it almost as much as I do.
My wife feels nothing for it, one way or the other, and at times I wonder if we even grew up in the same generation.
My daughter thinks mash is potatoes.

My wife LOVES the series but loathes the movie.

Well, you can't tell from my rugged male avatar, but I'm a straight female and I love M*A*S*H. Always did, always will. I watched it in its original run, and my husband and I own the "Martinis & Medicine" DVD set and watch a few episodes every once in a while. We go through the whole series in order and then start over again. I don't love every single episode ("Edwina" and "Hawkeye" are permanent skips) but most of them are great.

I've always been rather a tomboy and growing up, most of my friends were boys. Wonder if that has anything to do with it? I can recall as a teenager thinking Trapper was real cute but wasn't particularly attracted to Hawkeye.
